...or however that old adage goes.. Had an old friend contact me about a new vending business he was going into. He found an older van that was in good mechanical condition, but needed some "real attention" on the outside.
After some serious elbow grease, we came up with a new design for his new "ride". Clowning around, I mentioned that it would look good with flames on it. He freaked out!! "You can do that"??!! I wasn't going to make it cost him a fortune, so I did it in 1-Shot, rolled and airbrushed. He was ecstatic about the finished product....and I was happy to see this one GO.

That's the first time I've ever attempted to use transfer tape for masking flames, and cut them out with exacto knife...worked pretty well. I was just trying to hold the costs down, over the old tape and paper method. I think next time I'll use the high-tack tape. The medium tack has a tendency to not stick very well to itself. There were a few places where the paint bled under; but the blue pinstriping around them took care of that.
I used hardener in the paint for the flames. They should hold up for a good while, don't you think?

In Memphis, back before the advent of plotters, a lot of shops used the cut and roll/brush method of lettering. We used "adheseive protective paper" which soon became transfer paper. Non of this stuff sticks to itself well enough to prevent bleed unders. Use masking tape to bridge the overlaps and you won't have any problems. As far as how red One Shot will hold up these days, I haven't a clue.

So Dale, can I sell you a larger door for your shop?
Looks good sir, sticky paper (term I coined for it long ago, about same time as George said) works great, but as George alluded to, it doesn't stick to it's self worth a damn, I also use regular masking tape to close seams....also, if catalized, one shot should hold up better than w/o...plus you were masked, which allowed you to put down more paint than if single stroking it...
It is identical to one I did here, did Tom's sell out or something? Seems to be a wad of those Tom's stepvans out there....flames make me hungary for hot fries, lol...

Thanks, Frank, but I think I'll need a bigger shop to go with the bigger door. I just had to rough it, outside. Have you ever noticed that there will not be a bug within 34 miles of where you are about to do some painting; but the first stroke you lay down, they come a-swarmin'.
I don't think Tom's sold out; they replace their trucks on a regular basis. They're a pretty big outfit. That particular unit was made by Grumman, all aluminum....pretty cool rig overall.

Transfer tape makes a GREAT paint mask. I use 4025 . . . but regardless the tack, you have to burnish the edges with thumbnail or sqeegee or bottle top. But bleeding edges are not always a biggie if your gonna outline anyway.
The hardner DOES help it hold up a little longer. But if he could get it clear-coated in a few weeks it will last even longer. Stuff just fades in the sun man. Mabey he knows someone in P&B work who can clear at least the flamework if not all of it Which technically each element could be individually cleared, ya know?
Anyway, I love it. It's going to draw a lot of attention to his business and yours!
