Yesterday while lettering a sign, a young customer came in and saw me using my mahl stick and quietly inquired, "did you use that when you where young before you got shakey?"

I wish I would have been there to hear that. A long while back I was hand lettering a truck. A little girl, about 11 years old, asked me if I was an artist. I said "No, I am a sign painter." And she said, "Oh is that all."

I just got paid for a truck I finished. The owner wanted it to look "old". I discussed thinning the paint with clear, distressing it, etc. No he sez, I just want simple old time lettering. I did one stroke with a drop shade and he was so happy. I wanted to do real artistic lettering with in-lines and fades, no old one-stroke wins.

One stroke, the timeless, old classic stand-by.
