Ok, what am I doing wrong. Sometimes when I use HOK striping paint to stripe, it drys flat. I have been using a middle of the road brand (OMNI) of hardener combined with regular urethane reducer, mid temp. This is striping that will not be clear coated.

Most of the time I am clear coating over it so the flat finish of the striping paint is not an issue.

Your best test would be to use all the proper components from HOK and not substitute other products. We all do it from time to time to maybe save a few dollars but as soon as there is a problem and something has to be re-done there isn't much saved.

I looked up the HOK tech sheet on their website for the striping paint and it actually states that adding their activator KU200 will add gloss and durability to the paint when not clear coating over it. The mix ratio is 8 to 1. U00 is the reducer for it. All of their tech sheets can be downloaded and printed off.

Hope that helps...

Most likely it's the hardener you are using. Like Bevin said use the KU 200. I've used HOK for years. It takes a while to get used to. I was told years ago the mix could go from 8:1 all the way to 4:1 and still be good. I add hardener to get proper flow. The only time I use reducer is when I need to "wake it up" after it's been mixed a while. It tends to have a cup life of fifteen minutes to twenty minutes around here. If I am working on a big job, I only mix up fifteen minutes worth. It works best for me fresh with just the hardener.
A lot of the stripers that work dealer lots in Texas use Omni AU to stripe with. The mix on that stuff is 1:1!!!!! It works well but doesn't hold up to good. I sprayed the hood on my truck with it and it was dead after just a year. The fact that the mix is 1:1 is probably where your problem is coming from. BTW, the gloss on many HOK colors will be less than 1Shot

Well, it looks like a trip to the automotive paint store for me. If they don't carry it, I will order it from Coast Airbrush, Anaheim, CA. They are the best!!!
