As we get older and see so many of our friends die, it seems responsible to make the decisions before hand about our wills and trusts and stuff. DNR's and such need to be thought out and what happens with our organs and remains and what if any memorial we'd like.

There are items that I have that I always thought would go to an apprentice of mine. I have sign kits that were given to me and left to me from guys I served under that respected me enough to want me to have them. I frequently pull out a brush from one of those kits and letter remembering how good the tools were then and laughing as I remember incidents from our relationship.

Since the take over of our craft by computer operators, I've not had apprentices. Some that I've trained have retired and some are already deceased. I don't know what to do with my treasures and don't want them to be a burden to my kids.

How many remember the Art Sign Super Greyhounds? I still have a complete set. Antique airbrushes, compasses, tools replaced by plotters long ago. Sign magazines from back in the late sixties through four decades.

There is so much cool stuff that is dear to me and might never mean anything to anyone else. The stories that accompany everything that will be forgotten.

What are you guys gonna do?

Yes, Rick, both ideas need careful thought.
I'm in the same boat as you...

Since I have seen this process upclose with Cisco, I would suggest some of your un-used treasures could be donated to the students at Los Angeles Trade Tech College. A new Electro Zapper runs about 600 bucks. Quite a bit for a newby student. You may even sugesst to your spouse or really good friend to hold an auction of your toys if you pass unexpectedly. Even the great King Soloman couldn't keep any of his stuff when he passsed. So who are we?

Something else you might want to think about.....get in touch with the American Sign Museum, in Cincinnati. They are a beautiful repository of some tremendous memorabilia from our craft, from way back.

I was up there last month, and they had several displays of old,but precious sign kits and tools from the past. I'd almost bet they'd welcome your offer to have some of your articles on display too.

Have you ever helped a friend or family member move and as as you load/unload their 'precious' stuff you think WHAT A LOAD OF JUNK! It's my bet that those who handle my stuff when I'm gone will think the same thing.

My studio is chock full of so many 'cool' things I've gathered through my forty-five years in business. Each piece means something to me and reminds me of great times and fond memories of the past.

Does it need to be preserved? Do I even want it to be. Nope. I've instructed my family to sort through it all when I no longer need it, take what they want and either sell, donate or throw out the rest.

Until recently I was resigned (and perfectly OK) with the idea that our business would die with me. Now Peter and Hailey are majority partners with Janis & I only owning only a very minor share. My ego doesn't require that I own the business or be 'president' of the company. Janis was actually president for the bulk of the time, letting me concentrate on what I love best - creating the things that live in my head.

Now the question is where do Peter and Hailey want the business to go to suit their needs. I have no desire to quit working and it is kinda nice to not have to always be in charge of driving the bus.

I bet when Ricks Glawson's soul appeared in Heaven, it glowed like a brillient early morrning sun because of all of the gold dust he inhaled thoughtout his life time.

I would like to leave the business to my kids hoping they would be interested in carrying it on, or at least some facet or form of it. My two sons are hands-on guys: the older is an administrator of a construction/maintenance company and the younger works for the State as a CAD roadway designer. My daughter is an administrative assistant and a very artistic, crafty person. Who knows. If not, they can sell it all. As to the sheep farm, nobody but LynnDee and I seem to be wild about that. But our grand daughter loves animals so, we'll see.

One of the guys I worked with had the job of tending the horses when a wagon came in for lettering. The man I apprenticed to was handed a can of color when he graduated from his apprenticeship. This was one of the old Valentine press cans with a soldered top. There was a press with a crank that it went into and the color was mixed with varnish. That can was given to me when it was my turn. I love to shake it and hear the contents that were sealed in there probably in the late 1800's or early 1900's. Been in sign shops since then.

PS. Valentine paint started in my home town, Boston , Mass. and has developed into a company we know today as Valspar
