...If you were to start a new sign business tomorrow, what would be your plan of attack for marketing?
Let's say you already have a steady source of income to pay the bills and want to avoid being a 'FastSigns' type shop and instead focus on the higher end work and good design.
Is there still a market in small town America for quality sign work?

You need to build the market. Mike Jackson wrote a wonderful article about that in a early Sign Craft talking about what would happen if you dropped Gary Anderson anywhere in some obscure town in middle America. You should find that article.

Brand new, in a new town. Maybe a billborad right near the city's most popular sign shop. Gosh, a lot of how I would start up the business would depend on the size of the city.

Walk in on a high-end shop, ask for owner, say bring a message Ill save him a lot of money. Tell him youll work for free, doing the design you show him. Wait while nearby shopsowners approch and ask how much

My approach to marketing is very simple. I would first build samples of the Style of work I WANT to do in the future. This same style and quality would be reflected in my building, showroom, website, business cards and everything I did. I would say NO to anything that didn't fall into this category..
It works. We are currently booked almost two years out with ten employees going full blast.
