Not sure why the picture doesn't show anymore, maybe they don't like to be linked. See post below if you can't see it.

I don't mean to be critical, but some photos need more descriptive post titles than others. "Cool Pic" doesn't quite do it for this particular photo.

Kelly, I believe that the picture was taken way before my time, but it reminds me of some wonderful times I had in the late 50's and early 60's in Beaufort, South Carolina!!!!
Thanks for the reminder Kelly.

Kel, here is the other section of Shorpy's, the color rendering of one shot of your posted photo. I Love it and I too spend way to much time in that site.

Someone did a great job of colorizing the picture. It's weird, if you go to the Shorpy's link the same picture I posted colorized shows under the comments, but when you zoom in it just reverts back to this one. The original building still stands and there are current pictures of the Google earth image as well as some of posters on the inside walls under the comment sections. It's interesting!
Wouldn't it make a fantastic mural.

That's a pretty awesome shot, Kelly. There is such personality in buildings, and their characters, that just epitomizes Americana.
I'll bet, if you travel the right back roads in some states, you could find a couple of places like that, still today....building-wise.
We went to a blues festival a few years ago, in Bentonia, MS. There was an old general store there, that was quite similar to this one, in many respects. I'll see if I can dig out the shots.

Your right Dale, they are still out there. This one is in Mike Faigs neck of the woods in Tennessee, saw it last year. .

Hey Sam, This is the only picture I could find, of this old grocery, still in business, in Bentonia, MS. I had a couple of closer shots, with old black men sitting out on the porch. But check out the building itself. It's sway-backed in the middle, I guess from the weight of whatever's inside, all these years.
But, they're still out there.....today.

Kelly thanks for the eye candy!! I remember growing up with those ads; yes what a mural that would be!
Loving those photos!! and that last one with all the wares of bikes and pans and cans, is a dream for me, as I can see something out of country living but jazz it up a little bit; I would really enjoy rummaging through their goodies as I collect antiques and old bottles. I even have an old unicycle and gas powered lantern, etc, just stuff I've had for a while.
I have been intrigued with this finding for a month or so, and it stays on my mind; check it out; Paris apartment untouched for 70 years (vintage
and I am in love with the paintings also this next link has more pics ( was wondering where the dust is, and possibly it was preserved so well the dust couldn't get in; she must have dusted the day she fled Nazi Germans.

yep- I think that guy has a very cool job, scanning in all of those old photos in the archive, day after day, touching pieces of history that were captured in a moment...
I too have spent way too many hours pouring over photos on that site, I now have to limit my time on Shorpy- but I still love it

I've also spent a little time doing research on Shorpy's site, and have built a nice archive. Here's a few pictures I came across while doing research for a movie I'm about to start on. I found them on another archive site.

You know, Todd, I've looked at quite a lot of old pictures from all over the country, and most of the big cities had signs like this, all over the place.
Then, some jerko had to come along and invent zoning ordinances and building inspectors............

Lots of second class citizens in that top image Rick. If I come visit during your production would I be allowed? I'd love to see what it is like behind the scenes.

Kelly, I'm sure I could work something out(since you passed up the last offer). Should be a fun one. The Production Designer wants all the signs to be hand painted. They're talking in the area of 200 to 300 signs. I'm just in the process of putting a sign crew together.

So do you work mostly on site or do you do a lot from home? When does this one get started? Passchendale would have been an amazing set to visit, my bad!

Hi Kelly. It will be a combination of studio and also on site work. They plan to build a town with around 70 buildings, and also a lot of interior sets in the studio. I can't really say to much more at this time. One thing I can say is that there will be a lot of signs to paint.
