I allowed myself to be suckered into sending designs for an entrance sign to go in the next town, then I heard after the fact, that they were doing the "crowdsourcing" thing too. I don't think it;s ethical...letting dozens or even hundrends of people waste their time just so you can pick one....

On the horizon, there is a sign specific crowdsourcing website waiting to launch, the coding and design is already done. I have been on it and was quite impressive. A group of designers put pressure on the company involved and they pulled the plug but I imagine when the guy who started the idea leaves that company, he will get it going again.
I have 3 clients who design work on spec, they feel it's worth it. I imagine when this site goes up, they might try that as they can get more options in the same amount of time for less money.
I will not compete with third world designers and desperate newbies. But I believe there is enough work to go around for qualified designers, but I do get riled up when that one clown said it was good for the sign business.... sounds to me it's good for his sign business.
The only people who win on crowdsourced design is the customer making the contest and the website who hosts it.
Phooey!

When I was about 12, I got a job at a feed store. I asked the boss what the pay wd be, assuming it wd be the usual 25¢/hr to start (this was 1943), and he said we cd talk about that later after he saw how well I cd work. I worked all morning, cleaning out dog pens and chicken pens and such, so as I was leaving for lunch, I asked him again, and he said when he was a kid it was usual to work a couple weeks to show you cd do the job before discussing pay. I didnt return from lunch and that was the last time I did work on spec. You get what you pay for, I think I heard Buddy Bolden say.
