NO! 1-SHOT. RONAN OR HOK urethane ........... will work fine. CAUTION: PREP WORK IS MOST IMPORTANT............. some of the waxes, and polishes they use on boats, are a lot harder to eliminate so your paint will bind to boat. BON-AMI works well to remove anything between paint and boat.

Yes, Bon Ami works well but it is abrasive. The frst time I used it, I rubbed too hard on a 1/2" thick tempered glass attorney's door and it produced very fine scratches. I rubbed too hard while it was dry. Keep it wet and don't use too much pressure.
I would clean with a solvent wax & grease remover first, then lightly go over with Bon Ami, clean that with water then maybe use some alcohol and cheap paper towels.

i was speakin of FIBERGLASS boats.....the gel coat release agent is still on the fiberglass IF IT IS A NEW BOAT!!!! using SOLVENTS on it, will sometimes cause problems. MINERAL SPIRITS, no problem. moving to ACRYLIC ENAMEL REDUCER, is as far as i would push it. test in on the boat surface someplace it wont show if it softens the gelcoat. this is why i said bon ami............

I used to letter a lot of boats. Mostly fiberglas. I prep with GON wax & grease remover - two times. Then mist a wad of paper towels with water and go over the surface gently to cut the static.

Yeah, I've lettered a ton of boats with the 1-shot lettering enamel. dont thin it down too much and make sure wax is off surface good before you letter it or It will fish-eye on you. be sure about your location on the boat before you start lettering because sometimes the one shot wont all come of and it leaves a ghost behind.Especially on fiberglass. I think oven cleaner is good to get that off but I've never used it before. never had to. made double sure of my location on the boat before ever starting.

Spray Rapid Prep, wait 1 minute wipe off with Cheap paper towell, mold realease, wax silicon, grease oil etc. are now gone. Rapid Prep is a very strong "water base cleaner" that cleans better then most solvent cleaners but is safe to use.

I'll second that, Roger. Rapid prep works great. Wax or silicone will always make itself known with the first brush stroke, by crawling or fish-eyeing. As for paint, 1-shot usually works fine, though I had a boat this year that had been freshly painted with a two-part marine paint, and the owner said it had to be lettered with the same brand of paint to be compatible. Unfortunately I don't recall the brand; the hull was red and I hand-lettered the name in white, and was able to double-coat it within an hour.
