This is sort of on topic.. you'll soon see why.
I had been debating on painting out my kitchen round oak table to an antique white to lighten and brighten up my very woodsy upstairs.
So I had a unique idea. I took some premask (there! see?) and smoothed it all over the top to get a feel for how I liked the lighter toned effect. I left it for a few days to think about it.
Yesterday, Cody decided that it was time for the premask to come off. So I gave him permission to go for it.
Along with the removal of the premask, off came the finish as well.
There's a couple morals to this story.
1. Don't put premask on an oak table you wish to stay looking like oak.
2. Premask is a wonderful finish remover on oak tables!
Take your pick. Both good advice.

Just be glad the finish came off BEFORE you put a lot of work into refinishing it!
Try coating it with white then wiping off all you can, then give it a nice clear coat.It will give you a nice light colored table with a nice grain pattern....rather than solid white.

Donna, I have bathroom cabinets made of oak, which I STAINED an off white color. They came out real nice. remove the rest of the finish first though.
