Lightning struck a willow tree behind the house last night at about 1am. What an explosion!!!!! One piece hit the windshield of the truck and it cracked.....our garage and house weren't hit. We were shaken but OK. More storms likley today.

I was the closest I've ever been to lightning a couple weekends ago. We were at the beach for the Blue Angels show and an awful storm came up. We hunkered down under our 10x10 canopy, but it blew, rained and lightninged like a hurricane for about 45 minutes.
It hit quite a few times very close, in fact 5 people ended up going to the hospital because of it. I had reached up and was holding down the canopy and a bolt hit in the water a couple hundred feet out. It electrified the aluminum canopy like an electric fence.... I thought for a second I was really hit, but then noticed everyone else in the area had gotten it too...
Meanwhile, in the middle of the storm, there were probably 50 rednecks out in the water, throwing footballs and frisbies and acting like it was clear, calm and 95, completely ignoring the lightning popping all around us.

Lightnin... Makin Chips and scaring the bejesus outta folk! That's what happens when you heat the water in wood to a gazillion degrees in about 1/10,000 of a second.
