After exhaustive research... I've finally purchased a new digital camera - a compact point-and-shoot for the many times I don't want to lug around my Canon Digital Rebel XT slr.......
After reading several reviews, it came down to the new Fujifilm F100fd and the new Canon SD890 is.
I opted for the Fujifilm..... because it had more handy features, as well as what I perceived to be better picture quality on test shots at higher iso settings than Canon....
Although, the Canon would have been a fine choice too.
I have a Fujifilm now, the f10, and it has performed without problem for the handfull of years I've owned it. It's main downfall being that it couldn't handle motion shots well - - didn't have image stabilization, etc.
My main concern will be the battery performance on the new Fuji.... real life between 150 and 175 according to the test verses about 230 with the Canon.
But, all things considered - it's still a lot of shots and I think the image quality and other features including the wider angle lens will come in handy and offset the fewer shots...
Here's the two reviews I based my opinion on, if anyone's interested in a new camera for reference shots, portfolio shots of your signs, etc.

Well, I went for a new Powershot G9. It's a little larger and heavier than the newer sleek pocket cams, but will still fit in my pocket if needed. I ordered it from Sam's Club, so it should be here in the next couple days.
After reading the G9 review on your website up there, I decided to spring for it.
Good luck with your Fuji!

I got a Kodak for christmas. If you had bought a Kodak, you would be more productive and creative and your designs and layouts would be much improved.
Wait a minute ... this isn't the mac vs pc forum?
Dang ... no one ever wants to argue about digital cameras!!!

I have both a 4 year old Kodak 5 mega pixel which I use daily and a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F717 with Carl Zeiss lens which I'm told will do practically anything in the way of photos. The only thing I don't understand is why the heck I need these toys and what a super mega pixel camera will do that these won't. I get the detail I need at the closest point and am happy with what I've got, why would anyone need 10 mega pixels or is it just an ego trip

Good purchase Jon!! The G9 is reviewed as an awesome camera. You'll have a lot of fun with it and be very satisfied.
Michael - Kodak? It used to be called "Kojak" because only bald, old guys who use Windoze would buy them....
I'm just teasin' dude...lol...I bought a Kodak M863 for my Dad and Mom recently, and just recommended it to my brother-in-law, who bought one also. Nice little camera at that price-point.
Joey.... the reason I upgraded was to get image stabilization (for shakey hands and moving objects), more mega-pixels (so that I can enlarge shots to bigger sizes than the previous camera with less image loss), better lens, greater zoom capability, etc.
And... I gotta admit.... I'm a gadget guy...I'm drawn to new shiney things that blink and whirr like a moth to a buglight! ZZZZZZZAAAAAAPPPPP! goes my wallet

You're right.. I don't know why anyone would want sharper and more detailed pictures, Joey. I guess I did like the blurry, muddy pictures I had on my less-than-1-megapixel Kodak back in '95. Prints looked great, especially blown up enough you could see the individual square pixels.
I think I'll smear some Crisco on the lens of my new camera when I get it, just so I can make sure I'm not on an ego trip.

Jon, sorry bout the question but as far as your 1 mega pixel update I guess that would be similar to an update on your present keyboard which I can understand. The Sony I have shows great detail but than again I cannot see why I would want more detail than I already have. Myself as a pinstriper I find that those details come out excellent with my 5 mega pixel Sony which I can still sell for a couple hundred today if I needed. I have some excellent shots of bud as well as some coin size monograms which I use in my portfolio. I think of this like owning a new car as I'd rather have the comfort of my Mercedes Coupe than a new Honda even though I am still considering buying a new Bentley

For most uses, a 5 mexapixel camera is more than enough. If you're just posting snapshots on the web, a 2 megapixel camera does a great job. If you're getting 4x6 prints done, you still don't need a huge amount of resolution. The 10 megapixel cameras start making sense when you work with really large prints, or if you do a lot of cropping and you still want enough resolution to blow up the photos. To me, the additional resolution is like increasing the telephoto capability without a longer lense.
My mind wanders. And that's not a good thing, 'cause it's too small to be out there alone. Posts: 2288 | From: Midway, UT | Registered: Mar 2005

we got 2 digitals... wifes: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830122110 mine: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/nikon-coolpix-l3/4505-6501_7-31736755.html and both do what they are supposed to do. the NIKON, is LCD only.....which i dont like, but gettin used to it. most pixs i take with it are 1/2 of what its capable of doing. the FUJI S700, i got it for the wife, as a gift, and SHE LOVES IT. she has 3-4 YASHICA SLR bodies, ZIESS interchangable lenses, MAT 124G YASHICA, MAMIYA 2.25 X 2.25, darkroom equpiment so she knows cameras. the fuji feels like an SLR, and the quaility of the pixs are the best.

Russ - a agree....I don't really *need* the 12.1 megpixels of my new Fuji....but there have been a lot of times where I have done close crops in which I need to enlarge... not to mention some digital printer stuff that gets enlarged a great deal....that ought to help out.
But for general shooting and pictures, my Fuji 6 megapixel has been very adequate....
The other features I mentioned though...were worth an upgrade for me personally.
OP... I'm hoping my new Fuji with it's larger zoom capability will allow me to sneak up on you some day and get some quality pictures.
I am very tired of using the same ol' web low-rez head shots of you when I'm having a little fun cutting and pasting you into different scenes.
I still keep some of my cherished "OP and his man-boobs posing by ice-cream truck" shots in my portfolio for occasional kicks....but am needing something new.
Hoping I can get a nice paparazzi shot of you sneaking through the drive-thru at McDonald's some late night.

well thank you for clearing that up Russ and now I understand, hopefully I won't have to use that kind of feature of really large prints. My Sony does just whats needed and both my Epson printer and HP color laser prints out whatever I need in photographs. If I truly thought about really large prints I wouldn't have given my great nephew the Canon D40 I had stowed away as all the lens from my non digital Rebel.

I have a Kodak 270 I believe it is. It is a wanna be SLR. It has a wide angle and telephoto strap on lens. How I wish I waited. I find myself looking at the Nikon d60, but I know that I should wait to get a much more professional unit. I want to shoot in RAW and the D60 will but for $650.00 with a lens, and all the usual necessities it has to be cheap. My Kodak is really a point and shoot, just bulkier so it looks like an SLR, but not too anyone who knows. Any insight on my first SLR Todd? You seem well informed so I cherish your opinion.

Dana - I would defer to Mike Pipes.... he assisted me with deciding on my Canon Digital Reble XT....
It's been a really good camera.....I bought 2 lenses for it - both Canon image stabilized - and a very nice Canon Flash...by the time I was done I had some significant cash into it.
Haven't regretted it.... wish I had one of the new D- models they have now....they just keep getting better.
There's so many features on the Digital Rebel, I still haven't figured it all out!
You might want to start a new thread and reference Mike Pipes name...he'll be glad to give you advice... he does a crapload of photography.
But - be sure to go to B&H photo....so you don't have any worries!
Todd
