OK nettie, I posted, you can get that elbow outta my ribs now.
Looks like a good number of people had success through July according to the other thread.
Now that we're into August I've reviewed my progress through July and have made some headway as well.
My resting heart rate has now dropped to 56-60bpm - woo freakin' hoo that puts me into athlete status. hahahaha. My heart rate recovery, ie: the amount it drops one minute after stopping exercise, is now an awesome 60bpm. ie: it drops from 170 to 110bpm in one minute. 30bpm is considered good and 15 or less means increased chances of death within 6 years.
The cardiovascular system is showing great gains!
Couple days ago I also picked up a new scale, one that measures body fat percentage. I don't care about the BF% number itself, so long as that number goes DOWN. As long as that number drops, if my overall weight stays the same I won't be too heartbroken. By the way, it reads 32% BF.
My plan for August is a reduction in exercise and increase in calories. Sounds completely backwards but I think I've been overtraining and undereating despite the possitive transition in my upper body muscle tone.

I'll post quickly on here before I leave town. I'll be going to a wedding in Minnesota this weekend. Denise Carson, a good friend and fellow letterhead is getting hitched. I'm a lucky bridesmaid.
As I mentioned last week, I've upped my pilates and my weight classes to two times a week, and I am seeing some changes. Good ones, in my muscle definition.
I'm going to order a Omitron pedometer from Amazon this month and start seeing how many steps I take during a day. Just curious. It'll help me with tracking mileage on my walks too.
It's said that a person needs to take 10,000 for a goal of weight loss. 10,000 steps per day is what's considered an "active" person. Just a bit of trivia I thought I'd share with you all.
If you think you are having no problems filling that 10,000 ... I think you'd be surprised if you were to start tracking it. I know my pilates instructor (who I always consider to be active) was surprised to find out that her daily steps in a day amounted to only 6000, unless she actually took her fitness walk that day.
Well, it looks like many had a good month in July! Here's hoping things go well in August too!
Cheers everyone, and I look forward to more posts on this thread again this month! ~nettie

Holding my own here..no extra effort..it is just warm and humid enough to melt off a few pounds without doing much of anything.
One of these days I'll have to start doing the walking thing again..once it cools down a bit.

July turned-out to be my best month yet on the bike. It also turned-out to be a good month with the camera, ha ha.
With all of this riding, it's a great time to work through some projects in my mind, layout, color, construction, etc. The creative juices really get flowing. When I get back to the shop, I transfer it all to paper, and the projects are really coming together nicely.
Along with creativity comes the increased energy! Being as busy as I am, I really need to keep plugging along, and having the energy really helps.
Sleeping really well lately, and a resting heart rate of 48-52 bpm feels really great, and keeps the stress levels down.
I just can't imagine being without exercise. Great for the body, mind, and spirit!
Peace out, Bob

I don't know how much I will be getting done this month. I had the treadmill stress test before I left for Larry's white's meet. The technician called while I was in Cal. and told me to get to a pharmacy immediately to get a script of nitro.
Just talked with the Dr.'s office and they think that there might be a blockage. so I have an appt. with the heart Dr. next week.

Some things better and some worse with my prostrate and bone cancer.
Spent a week in the Hospital for pain control. Ten more Radiation treatments. They changed my Chemo which I get every three weeks. Had to stop my PT temporarily because of complications with my right femur. Still can't walk but am hopeful that I'll be able to in the future with a walker.
Other than that everything looks great and I have gone back to carving my birds...although I have a problem with control of my right hand. I'm hoping the carving will be good therapy for that.
I'm thankful to have a Wife that takes care of me without ever once complaining.

Here's a sampling of my latest workout logs. No more hour, hour and a half sessions. It's now all about short, intense workouts.
For those that don't know, HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. For me that means 1 minute at full tilt or 90% of max heart rate then about a 20% decrease in intensity for a minute, then back up to 90% and just alternating like that for 20-30 minutes. It wears ya out.

I came home from a week of my camping and dropped the extra weight from just 'doing' stuff and not stuffing my face. LOL
So back there again tonite to start the weight gain all over again.
I fit in one speed walk with Jenna (dog) as I was feeling sluggish from doing nothing. I'll keep that up when the need arises. Luckily it doesn't arise too often. Need to read my book too!

Well, even though most of you don’t know me…I joined in last month’s health club so, I’ll join in again. I am still losing, and I also started lifting – free weights. Love it. I have also recently read about high intensity interval training, Mike and was going to start that too. It burns the most fat!
I am setting up a home gym…do any of you have one? What kind of stuff do you have in it?
I noticed that you had asked last month about whether the SBD was something that could be maintained for life, Janette and MY answer is yes. If you can make a commitment to any kind of healthy eating plan, then yes. But as with everything it takes discipline and exercise. I almost hate telling people I follow the SBD, now I just tell them I eat healthy. I do see why people would think it’s a fad diet, if you use it as a weight loss tool, it is. But, if you learn to make the changes and teach yourself healthy eating habits, whole foods etc…it’s not a fad, it’s a way of life. It’s all about attitude and commitment.
Don’t give up on the SBD, Laura…you need it now more than ever. It was a diet written for heart health. I’m sending good vibes your way regarding the heart issues!

Good news, back under 200 lbs... 12 down and 23 to go.
I thought Dan's picnic would have set me back a bit, but we walked it of by a lovely stroll through Minter gardens, followed by a 10k walk along the Vedder River. Moved into phase 2 of SBD, great to have some fruits again. It's a livable thing.

ROVE, glad youre doin better, i 2nd the "great wife"! i got one also, shes been at my beck and call since the 1st surgury jul 20th. after that one the doctors informed us that he wasnt happy with what he was cuttin outa my bladder and said i need to start thinking about kemo/kemo wash, radiation, GTB treatments(they put active tuberculosis germ into the bladder to kill the active cancer cells)and possiable bladder removal. so they put in a catheter and sent me home for week and i had to go back into surgury jul 27 so they could finish the tumor removal. well this one went great, got all the tumor and it was non-invasive c-1 carcimoma. and all the things he told me the week befor was wiped out. all they gona do now is every 90 days i get a camera in the bladder so new tumors dont get a chance. with this behind me and still healng, the local VA doctoris concerned about my cholestrol beign elavated. so since i started to watch my food intake after the 1st surgury and dropped 8 pound that week, i am gona move to a almost VEGAN diet with some raw fooding and juicing to bring the weight down and the cholestrol in line.

My ultrasounds of all my arteries came back good: hooray, hooray! Then I went for blood tests: no need for cholesterol meds or anything, but, I am trying a synthroid for my thyroid which is elevated a bit. I just started yesterday so I should be more energized and drop some of my xtra lbs. Even though the blood test showed normal as the docs read them, I asked my doc to check some other levels, as I've been "sluggish" but it doesn't show up on tests. Good cholesterol is very high, probably because I drink soy milk and eat a fair amount of fish and eastern Indian spices. Wish me luck, I've lost 5 lbs in a week and a half, and just starting!

High around 75, with very low humidity and really blue skies. The evenings have been dipping into the low 50's.
Some leaves are already starting to change. The poison ivy is turning crimson, the sumacs, and some maples are also showing color. The combination of the goldenrod, and purple loose strife in bloom at the same time makes for some really nice scenery on a ride, walk, or jog.
Are you still moving out there?
Walk the dog, take a jog, go for a paddle or get on the pedals!
Ahhhhhhhhhh, life is good.

Got right back into my Step class the day after my return. Felt good to get moving.
Last night I went with my bike group up on a new route up in Tarpon Springs, and we rode over 18 miles. It was a great ride, and just what I needed!
Still haven't taken the kayak out since I've been home. Maybe tomorrow.

We've still been walking 2 miles per day with very few misses. Even when its been hot we walk right at sunset for 35 minuets. (not so hot then)
I reached 147 lbs. Then bouned up to 151.5 today.
Blood pressure for me is a problem, its back up to 144/96. I had a moment of weakness eating at Cracker Barrel and had the SunRise sampler. Way to much salt in that breakfast.
I guess its Oatmeal for me or a visit to the doctor....(i hates oatmeal)
And, by the way, we bought a 1/4 Bison, been eating it up these last few weeks. Its really good! Then we went back out to Ruby Tuesdays Restaurant and had the Bison Burger we use to eat...didn't taste so good (but the same as I remember)
Wow, what a difference from buying the meat from a home town farm/ranch and having the meat processed by a home town butcher. The care and quality was hugely different on the dinner plate.
Just FYI

Good going Draper! I've not tried Bison, but now I'm curious.
Just wanted to interject, that a couple weeks ago, our local Albertson's had Wild Sockeye Salmon at 14.99 a pound.
Albertson's has their own salmon farm so the price on their farm raised salmon is pretty cheap. Sometimes as low as 3.99 or 4.99 per pound. I have usually been getting that, and it's really delicious.
This time I decided to fork out the bux and try the Sockeye stuff. It looked deeper in colour than the other. I didn't think it would be as good because I think the fat content in it is lower ... so I thought it would be dry.
It really was delicious, the flavour was wonderful. Darn! hahahaaa
So I think I'll alternate getting the expensive stuff on occasion, with the farm stuff from here on out, since I won't always want to invest so much in the purchase.
No kayaking for me this weekend. No time to fit it in. I'm off now to mow the lawn, and get a few mdo boards coated out.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend! ~nettie

Cranked-out some miles last night, and slept like a baby (I usually don't sleep well on Sunday night)
The legs are feeling well, and the scenery is starting to lean towards autumn. Cool temps at night, and low humidity make for some great riding weather.
The trails in the Adirondacks are starting to call my name, and it's time to get above 4,000 ft. Hiking season is upon me, the bugs are starting to thin-out, and the trails are in good shape. I need to knock-out a few high peaks this autumn to get closer to being a "46'r!
Bruce, way to go! The next 10 months will be easier than the first 10.
Keep moving.
Peace out, Bob

I was at a jetski race this last weekend and all my buds I haven't seen since another race in early June were commenting on my weight, asking how much more I had lost (none) and saying I looked a lot more firm and toned.
Glad someone else could see it! Means my brain isn't just tricking me into thinking I'm toning up.

Well I finally made it back to Karate 3 times a week after my break for June/July and first week of Aug. Feels good. Dropped a pound or two last week. Down to 149. I need to lose at least another 20. So I'm thinking maybe 10 weeks @ 1 1/2 to 2 lbs a week- target October 23rd -135 lbs.(just because I know the last weeks won't be easy, and that 130 is darn near unattainable for me, and Thanksgiving is in there) OK now I have set my goal.

Well I've done it... I've cut exercise back to one hour each day, split into two 30 minute sessions and I'm now eating 4,000 calories every day. That's a whole lotta food when all you eat is healthy "clean" stuff.
The sick part is I'm still maintaining weight. I had thought maybe my metabolism had slowed down from being on reduced calories for so long but evidently it's rising to the occassion to burn off this extra fuel and doing a good job at it.

At 250lbs my base metabolic rate is approximately 3,000 calories per day. ie: just to lay in bed all day and do absolutely nothing, my body requires 3,000 calories just to function.
Add in the 500-1000 calories worth of exercise I do every day. I may only do an hour total but the time I do spend is IN-TENSE! This gets the metabolism fired up and forces it to burn longer.
Then add another 500 calories to allow for muscle repair and growth.
That's 4,000-4,500 calories. I zig-zag calorie intake based on activity level, days I work harder I eat more and easier days I eat less, to an average of 4,000 per day for the week.
We'll see how it goes after a little while longer but I did the 1500-1800, 1800-2000, 2000-2500 calorie thing and it didn't work. Well, the 1500-1800 worked great when I had lost that first 100lbs but I lost muscle along with it. Since then I have rebuilt the lost muscle and now I'm going for a "clean bulk". At this point, simply cutting calories and exercising moderately just don't work.
In otherwords, now my goal is to gain weight in the form of muscle, by eating a high volume of super clean (healthy) food. When I put on a few pounds of lean mass, it will then be time to reduce calories once again and strip more fat away utilizing the extra muscle to do it.

Thanks Bob for keeping this thread rollin' this month!
I did manage only one kayak paddle for August. Better than none I guess. It's just been so hot here in Florida. We ended up doing a sunset paddle a few nights ago.
I'm keeping up with my classes, but the weekly bike rides have been washed out for 3 weeks now. Bummer! Lots of rain lately.
I have been using my new pedometer for my walks, and have also worn it a few days to see how many steps I take on an average day. Just out of curiosity. (I love new gadgets!)
I've been in an organizational cleaning mode here again. That always makes me feel better and somehow lightens the loads of the clutter that piles up in my head too.
How's everyone? Has it been a good month? Are ya ready for September?

I've added some new exercises to my weight lifting routine and boosted up the weights on everything else to get some shock going again which will kickstart more growth.
Everything is leaning down at a pretty evenly distrbuted pace. My legs are starting to look sharp, chest is getting leaner, muscles in my arms, shoulders and back getting a little more definition. I hit my back probably the hardest of all the muscle groups.
Scales are crap, mirrors and friends/family are my eyes now.
