I have to paint some anodized aluminum extrusions black to match the panels they frame. The supplier says anodization is an effective primer while my paint supplier says the anodization has to be sanded off with an etching primer applied before topcoating.
Who is right?

Marty - I'd just 'scuff em with whatever abrasive I happened to have handy - fine grit sandpaper - Scoth-brite pad - even a copper Chore-Boy will do just fine - 'slap the Black Paint to 'em - how long do they need to last? You might also pay attention to cure times using Industrial Enamel - humidity here has been bad lately -

yeah, if you're using industrial enamel, a good scuffing and grease remover should do just fine!

Marty I wouldn't sand or scuff it; anodizing is a very effective treatment and will help your paint stick a lot better than on the bare metal. I was a journeyman aircraft sheet metal mechanic for many years so I speak with knowledge. It's probably illegal but zinc chromate is the best primer to use.

i would not scuff it either, not worth it. we have been painting this stuff for several years. i would thought, even though it may not seem necessary, hit a light coat of primer on it before the topcoat.
since this was brought up we have a company in town that is starting to powder coat and you would not beleive the kandies and bright translucents they are power coating on aluminum now. it was unreal. if he gives me a good price i will not have to paint my own aluminum anymore, its such a pain anyway!

Sure it will stick for a while but for the long haul scuff it and prime it with Mathews two part chromate and finish coat...you will never have to look over your shoulder.

Several manufacturers make acid wash primer for priming aluminum. They all seem very similar and work well.
One nice thing about the acid wash primers from Matthews is that they come in different weights for filling different grit scratch marks.

Ricky is correct. Every one of my sight sytems are anodized, and I get rare requests for odd after the fact colors. We use acrylic urethanes for those.
And I should add that we do spray an etching compound on before painting.
