Hey Bob, you wanna see the Krispy Kreme lingerie calendar?
Karyn I get some weird ones. The best are the ones where the sender's name is a combination of two completely unrelated words that obviously are not name words. I don't have any in my inbox right now and can't remember some of the good ones but if I come across any I'll post 'em up here.
I do occassionaly get bid requests for... get this.... pipes.
Yeah, because of my last name I get these emails from people needing huge volumes of piping stuff. lol

Most of mine lately have been from lenny@yahoo.com, or insert any name you like . com. A bazillion of them. I delete online as no message shows up in that forum. Never a subject. Don't know where the heck they derive from!

As of last week I no longer get any spam or junk mail at all. I don't know what its called but our internet server guru guy has something that cost me $24.00 a year per email address and it stops the crap dead cold. The best money I've spent to date!

It sounds like your tech guy has enabled Spam filtering at your mail server Bob, some ISP's charge for it and some offer it free but you have to enable it yourself from your login/control panel at your ISP. Some legitimate email might be erroneously tagged as spam and filtered out, that's why they don't always enable it by default. Out of my three main email addresses, the only one that doesn't get spam is the one which is used on the website, thanks mainly to munging/obfuscating it on the html side so that the programs that trawl the internet for email addresses don't see it as an address at all and therefore leave it alone. Thanks to Empy for the tip, it's well worth googling. HTH, David

alt.spam is a newsgroup worth reading, for anyone who thinks spam messages are worth pondering. You can discover what all those freaky word combos mean, if you're really intrtigued. Then, if you really pay attention and activate the ol'reading comprehension, you can stop them. The down side, of course, is one less moronic hassle to complain about.

I switched to using Mozilla's Thunderbird because of its built in anti-spam program, but it isn't as effective as it should be.
I finally forked out a few dollars for McAfee's Spamkiller and upgraded to Microsoft's Outlook (not to be confused with Outlook Express). The combo has filtered out probably 99% of the spam so far. Only 2 pieces of spam have actually made it through in the past 4 weeks.

I really don't know. My computer's at home and at work are set up to accept my Earthlink and RoadRunner accounts. I also have a third account that is setup with a commerce site that I do distibution for on the side. All three get spammed constantly.
I'm guessing at the actual percentage that is being blocked. When I was using Thunderbird, I averaged about 70 or 80 pieces of spam per day collectively from all three accounts.
McAfee Spamkiller doesn't work with Thunderbird or at least I haven't found a way to work together. I bought MS Office and started using "Outlook" with McAfee's Spamkiller. So far, I've been I've been pretty pleased.
Its interesting to note that I've had my RoadRunner account at home for a few years before my company got DSL from Earthlink via Sprint. For the first few years, I rarely ever got any spam through my RR account. But, with Earthlink, I began getting tons of spam within a week. My RR account didn't start getting flooded with spam until just last year. I've no idea what triggered it.

Thanks David. As I recall your description is pretty close to what my guy told me. It works and I don't mind if one of two legit emails might get tagged. If someone important really needs to get hold of me then they'll figure out a way. It sure beats all the crap I was getting before.

thanks David, Bob & Glenn. I'm ready to try some of these ideas. My spam count (not to be confus ...ah never mind)is not too high on the current address, but I disabled my companies first addy which I used successfully for 8 years (& still have on 3500 business cards, in 4 employee or family names)after using it for an airport wireless hot spot a year ago. I'd like to reclaim that address.

Mailing lists.
Friday, we recieved an email from a supplier here in the Atlanta area who requested email adresses on their website for anyone who wanted to recieve emails wth specials and documentation. Karen and went over it...they'd sent the same file out to over 1000 sign shops up and down the southeast... and with just a click, drag and copy, that mailing list was easily saved. There are all kinds of cmpanies who use these lists...some buy and sell them.
I'll be calling the supplier first thing today to bring the email to their attention. Rapid

You guys don't want 150 offers a day for soft cialis, penis enlargement pills, dating services, Free Razor phones, and that missing inheritance money you were supposed to get? Oh, and how about Classmates.com, there is a reason we don't associate with those people - we didn't like them then and we still don't. The jocks are bald and have beer bellies and most of the cheerleaders are on their 5th marriage and two of them grace the Krispy Kreme Calendar. I never even open spam; never know when it might contain malicious code.

I've just started getting spam with dates of posting 2-4 days in the FUTURE - unbeleivable.
Mozilla works very well once you have spent the first few weeks assigning ips to junk folder. You can very easily setup the junk control filters on each and every account you monitor.

Thanks for the tips, guys. And for that high school reunion thing, Rickie, you're right on. Now, I have better things to do than go to those, as I'm going to be coming into a lot of money importing chems here from foreign countries, not! My lawyer was in my class so I'm going this year! ha.

Cilialis etc has slowed down as have the fake university titles, but the Russian/Nigerian/USA dictators with zillions have increased, as have the Paypal & ebay "someone has violated your account", "you have added this email address to your account" or "you have been selected for a gold..." which have grown to over 15 a day just of that...
Logging on each day is a case of Log on, hit delete, delete, delete...
We have spam filters on some (not all) addresses, and they work pretty well.
