I was discussing a logo design with a customer who told me he wanted to suggest an "array" of services he offered and when I proposed using a spectrum or something similar, he just about freaked out and said he didn't want anything that even resembled a rainbow because it was gay.
First, let me say I have nothing against gay people, so please don't hijack this post to defend or bash them. That's NOT what this is about. I just want to know if rainbows have officially been co-opted by the gay movement to the degree that the rest of us can't use them anymore.

Yes...if something has a rainbow on it, it is considered "gay-friendly".

My understanding is Yes, these days. Doesn't have to be though. We have a rainbow paint nearby. I have a friend that is military in the Rainbow division. Swat team/game known as Rainbow 6.
But little bumpersticker rainbows, Yeah, gay.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows? And what's on the "other side"? Yup, it is a gay symbol. I learned that in Edmonton last year when I remarked about the cute rainbow sticker on a car to Stevo. I don't care either way. Just wanted to confirm it. Love....Jill

See spot run. Spot can run. Look at spot. Look Look Look Run spot. Run Run Run See spot run? It is fun. Run all day. It is so gay. What a gay time.
The word "gay" was not used in normal conversation in my neck of the woods. At least we didn't use it. But I remember repeating it enough to know that it meant happy. At least it did then. Sometime after grammar school, I guess, it got hijacked like a lot of other words. What will be next? Now rainbows for cryin out loud.

Don't laugh, but a distant cousin of my fathers, who's long since passed away, had the christian name "Gay" spelt like that, and his surname was hyphenated "Carlton-Stiff". Both were old family names. It wasn't so odd in the 1920s I guess...

"But guess what...I don't think the creator of the rainbow gives out copyrights."
Still, it is a shame that particular peice of nature and art is indeed considered by many to have an 'all-inclusive' connotation and has been allowed to stand as a generalized symbol of the 'Rainbow coalition' and gay rights. . . .
Kind'a shoddy & trashy on their part . . .I mean, could'nt they have created their own unique logo? Something more unusual, odd, or different, to use as they're trademark image??

This is totally asinine. (I really wish there were 2 S in that)
If the use of any rainbow implies the owner is gay, does the use of dark blue in a logo imply the business is owned by nike? If a logo has yellow in it, it's owned by McDonalds? Could this be any stupider?

Look Rainbows do not belong to any such group, nor do colors mean the same thing to everyone. If the customer is hung up on it then so be it. I also hear walking under a ladder is bad luck, a black cat crossing your path is bad luck, and so on.
a rainbow only means "gay" to a gay person or someone who learned about it. Hell let's take the word gay for example. See what I mean?

That story Steve posted is pathetic. Sad. Outrageous. Fancy restricting children's colouring-in colours to red white & blue and don't you dare bring any other colours along...now who'll grow up with hangups?

My Father upon retirement, spent quite a bit of time, lobbying the city where he retired, to change name of his street as Gay meant something totally different today than in years past and it wasn't PC; he had support of neighborhood. Even got a newspaper article on it, and they(the neighborhood) won!!! the city agreed to change the name of the street...his new street name? Ya got it!!! GAYE !!!

i have had litle involvement with the ay community as a whole, tho i do have a couple of friends that bat for the other side, so to speak. i've never seen any of them proudly sporting rainbows upon their persons !!
if your friend / customer is worried about a rainbow, suggest a prism, the image of a prism is linked with the coollest band of all time, and can definitely not be considered gay, if anyone says it is i'll swing my handbag atchya !!
ps, my 71 cuda race car is pink, am i gay ? it is a drag car !!

My old high school and University's colors were/are Purple and White- so I REFUSE TO ALLOW purple to be tainted and labeled as a "GAY" color.
I guess I'll have to stop buying Skittles, as there slogan is "taste the rainbow" Maybe I can get rid of our Rainbow vaccum cleaner, as well.
I am not, nor have the desire, to become gay- but I do love women- does that make me a lesbian?
I seems like they are turning everything into "gay" symbols- where will it end? Next thing you know some people will say that my black velvet painting of a unicorn leaping over a rainbow- with Billie Jean King ,K.D. Lang, and Rock Hudson holding hands along with the cast of "Will and Grace" in the background, set against the San Fransico skyline has some kinda symbolism. (OK- I don't really have this painting, the one I have is the black velvet painting of the dogs playing poker.)

LOL....nice part about adopting embryos is that you don't have midnite feedings, no diapers to change, no crib, toys or clothes to buy and best of all, they never cry!

I just went to make a sign survey and about a block away I spotted a United Way sign I painted. And wouldn't you know it -- the United Way logo has a rainbow on it. Who among us will come forward and enlighten the United Way folks of the new mean of a rainbow.......
