Hope you guys don't mind me asking this, but i amswered the thread about the large magnets & was hoping someone would say something about it. I have a customer that claims my magnets made the 4 year old paint bubble under it. I have never heard that one before, have any of you? If I heard him right, I think the magnet was left on his truck over the winter, but I don't see how it could make the paint bubble.

YOUR MAGNETICS DIDNT MAKE THE PAINT BUBBLE...if he paid for them.....THEY WAS HIS...and his fault for LEAVING THEM ON FOR 6-12 MONTHS WITHOUT EVER REM0VING THEM...dont let him b.s. you.....its all his fault...

Yes, it happens all the time. And there have been many posts about what we do to prevent the customer from blaming us.
The magnetics did cause it. But it was more his neglect for never removing them to clean behind them either. The sand and grit rubs the paint until micro holes wear into the coatings. Water gets in and rusts from underneath. It takes at least about 7 months of never taking them off for this to happen.
He did it from not cleaing .

I'm gonna argue that the magnets did NOT cause the bubbles. His lack of maintenance and inability to follow manufacturer's care instructions (which could also be known as pure laziness) caused the bubbles.

Yes, Bobbie... don't let him get away with it. Tell him politely that you are sorry he left his mags on all winter but it was nothing you did and everything he didn't do.

Yes, leaving the magnets on would cause the paint to fail. Did you explain the care of magnets to him? I alway do, but I think I'm going to add it in writing on the invoice. Some shops have the customer sign a "release" showing that they were told of the magnets maintenance.

Yes, leaving the magnets (I dislike magnets) on for any extended period of time like 2 weeks or more basically anytime of the year will cause serious damage to the vehicle finish. (I can't stand magnets)
When it rains, or dew, or moisture from anywhere gets behind the magnet combined with dust and dirt will start the process. (I hate magnets)
First, the moisture & dirt HMMM! And road SALT in your area.... trapped there, are 'eating at' the paint surface...after a month of this, if the magnet can be removed, you will already begin to see fading from this abrasive activity.
(I detest magnets)
Remember, the magnet is not attracted to the paint but the steel beneath it...there is a whole 'nuther dynamic happening there between the steel and the mag and the paint is in the way...I'm sure some scientist could explain in a very technical way how that contributes to the deterioration of the paint also. . . (I abhor magnets)
Say the magnet is not removed for up to 4 months...the paint has already begun blistering due to continuity of afore mentioned things....now we have 'scratched' and faded paint becoming blistered paint what then?? No paint no protection.... Rust sets in . . .
Along with all the this, the magnet is also 'rotting' into this surface the way deer hide rots into a stiff texture until time decays it to a pile of dull furr and it eventually returns entirley to the earth . . .
Hence, I have given you a crude and gross explaination for the reason magnets seem 'stuck' and will eventually only come off in torn peices . . . a baked-on, rotting carcass-of-a-magnet is not a good magnet. . .
Have I said I LOATHE magnets....

I fear that I have become morbid with my personal attacks on magnets the way one might attack an inanimate gun after a bullet from it penetrated one's truck door . . .
Please change all intended-attacks above away from the magnet-material since I now do hereby direct them at the OWNERS of magnets . . .
Have I said I can't stand magnet-owners?
The person whose magnet gets blown off is either being passed by a speeding 18-wheeler, is in a high-speed chase with the law, or has been looked favorabley upon by God.
The person whose magnet is stolen is either lying, or has been looked favorabley upon by God.
Did I mention disliking magnet owners??
They are often lying, procrastinating and negligent feinds who are out to destroy their own vehicle finishes.
The road to vehicle-paint-damage-hell is paved with their good intentions.
Beware the vast majority of these people. They do speak with forked tongues, saying such pleasing things as:
~"I only need the magnets on my vehicle 1 or 2 days a week max."
~"I intend to remove & clean my magnets weekly."
~"I will never fold my magnets, nor will I allow employees to do so. Neither will I allow myself or employees to roll them up and store them in a tool box nor allow tossing them in the bed of the truck or on the floor board."
~"I will always store magnets on a clean flat surface like a file cabinet or 'fridge."
~"I fully understand that a folded or rolled up magnet will eventually become bent or creased and that a bent or creased magnet will not perform properly on my vehicle"
~"I only need magnets temporarily, for the next 2 weeks."
~"I will never place a magnet across any moulded part of my truck."
~"I will always remove my magnets prior to any kind of car wash"
~"I will never apply magnets to my vehicle when my vehicle is wet."
~"I will never blame you for the severe damage to my vehicle which you have warned me could occur if I am negligent in my magnet maintenance duties."
Magnets & their owners are intolerable to me...I am intolerant of this material and it's allegedly 'educated' user...
Stamp-out, abolish and do away with magnets.
Now I'm just being repetitous, redundant & repetative . . . .
This sermon is over. You may run screaming from the building, kneel and pray quietly, or repent of all your magnet sales . . .

Just to offer a slightly different perspective...
Tell the customer to clean the backs of the magnetic signs and carefully place them back where they were.
Nobody will know that there is a problem.
OR tell himn it's his fault for removing them..if he'd left them in place nobody, including himself, would even know!!!!
In all seriousness, I have never had a complaint about Mags causing problems...they always fall off before any damage can be done. Then I get to redo the job at a lesser price because I already have the file on the computer and I don't have to buy another batch of mag material.
It's a win-win situation!!!!!

Bobbie, If you are going to sell magnets take the time to sit down and draft a magnet care instruction sheet. Most customers have no idea how to safeguard against these problems. You may not have either, till now, but now that you do, I believe it is your responsibility to educate your customers. While you're at it do one up for banners as well. Almost every one I have ever sold a banner to has been surprised when I tell them to roll with the letters to the outside. The natural instinct is to do the opposite in order to protect the face. Lots are surprised when I say never fold it - "Well it is vinyl - I didn't think it would wrinkle." I don't think it is fair to blame the customer's stupidity for this if they are not educated first.

Last week a customer brought in a 6 month old truck for me to letter. He'd hung one of thos magnetic yellow ribbons on both of the doors. They've already done damage to the paint. The clearcoat has been corroded by road salt along the edges of the ribbon.
I won't do magnets anymore because of the following reasons, which I explain to customers in this manner....
If I have to cut vinyl and apply it to mags for a truck, let's just skip the magnet material. It saves material cost, needs no removing and cleaning and just plain looks better. "Magnets are temporary. Are you going to be in business temporarily?"
If that doesn't sway them, I scare the hell out of them with a picture of a truck I saw years ago. The owner removed his mags when I got there after a 2 hour drive, and the doors were rotted and rusted beyond repair. The doors had to be REPLACED because of the lack of maintenance, he had to pay for me to waste half a day on the road, and lost two weeks time while the truck was under repair and repaint.
..and if THAT doesn't dissuade them, I give them a maintenance sheet and CMA. Rapid

I had two customers recently who purchased magnetics on trucks they use everyday. I tried to talk them out of it, but to no avail. One came back after a month and wanted the truck lettered. Said it was too hard to take care of them. The other decided he wanted his truck done to look good and didnt like the magnetics either. They could have saved themselves some money if they would have listened to me. By the way, one of them had one of his magnetics on a back part of his bed on a welding truck which had been painted maybe a couple months before. He left it on there since day one, and the paint bubbled under it. It wasnt a factory finish, probably spray paint, but it did bubble badly. Its his fault Bobbie, unless you didnt tell him how to take care of them, and Im sure you did.

It does'nt matter how many printed directions you give them...nor how many minutes you spend explaining the problems.
It would'nt even matter if every set of mags came with a free demo-video of these details along with other customer testimonials on the video pointing to damage on their vehicles...EVEN if you make them sit in a dark room and watch the video . . . .
the MAJORITY of people will only maintainence the magnets improperly or more often, not at all . . .

I make my customers signs a care sheet that also states my company isn't liable in any way for damage to the vehicle or any other surface where the magnetics are applied. I give them a copy!

Thanks to you ALL! I also wanted to say that last year when this fiasco began with the magnets sticking to people's vehicles-3 different customers, to be exact & one was the County Commissioner's, I had posted a topic on it, & had gotten this customer afterwards. I had WARNED him & tried to talk him out of them, but he insisted that is what he wanted. I did not make him sign anything. Funny, I was talking to him while he was climbing into his truck, as if he wanted to get away from me, & I felt terrible. My husband got angry & told me to let him go, & forget about it, he got his new ones.
NOW... I will make them sign my care sheet with all my warnings.
