Does any one know what type of paper I can use in my vinyl cutter to make a template for lining up adhesive backed dimensional letter on a sign panel?

I cut the letters myself.

Thanks,
Joe

I use 20lb bond paper from N Glantz. It comes in 24", 30", and 48" rolls. I use the plotter to draw the pattern and then pounce with Electro-Pounce. You can also use backing paper from vinyl.

The paper Don recommends should be fine. But as far as width used, you probably won't need more than the 24" unless there are studs. If only pads or adhesive backing, you only really need the bottom contours of the letters & the baseline across. So you might only be using 3 or 4 inches width (height-wise) max but could be less. Just make sure the bottom of the paper is parallel with the baseline. (drawing a box might help if done on a friction fed plotter where you cannot depend on plotter staying true) Whence you attach the pattern just eyeball (trust your eyes) vertical placement of the letters guided by the letter outlines contours showing the bottoms of letters only on your pattern. You really don't need the whole letter. Just be sure pattern strip is placed correctly b4 applying letters. And once done you can easily remove the pattern/template.

I use "Butcher Wrap". And like Bill said, "You just need the bottoms.

AT my shop we lay out the letters as desired and stretch 2" adding machine tape along the bases and mark. Less hassle from wind at install. Just position letters and mark pin positions on wall and drill.

I've used adding machine tape for decades. You could also plot on some cheap vinyl and weed out the letters.
