a request came in today to paint some 16" letters across a newly surfaced blacktop alley. This will probably be a one time use. I've seen the highway dept. put down something that looks like a vinyl and blow a flame on it to set it and it handles the traffic for several years. What is it and where can I get it and can it be cut with a plotter? Other than that, I wonder what vinyl I could put down and how to remove the app tape to use it as a stencil? I really don't want to cut a stencil out of refrigerator boxes.

I cut stencils out of PVC (with CNC router) or cardboard(1 time use)and spray. For letters that size it's kind of a pain, but not too bad, to use a pounce pattern with white powder, and paint it with a brush and roller. I use S-W traffic paint and it works real well. Dries really fast. Plan on throwing the brushes away when finished.
