Yes, I still have paper patterns. Some from murals, most from walls etc. jobs. Some of those patterns are over 25 years old. I have been tossing them on top of my office for about 7 years. Very messy. I think i need to build a rack for them. I don't know why I save them all, but I do. I especially like the "Pinstripe" patterns. It's easy to re-use them. Just a few changes with the brush and it's a new design. Most patterns are 30 in wide butcher wrap, but some are 8 to 10 foot wide. It shouldn't take much, they don't really weigh anything. I just want get them organized. Maybe the tall ones can be vertical and the shorter ones horizontal. I'm just thinking out loud.

years ago I read a feature article in Signcraft (I think) the guy that said he folded his like the old street maps. Said he had years of patterns neatly folded and kept like files on milk crates and no issues when unfolded to reuse.

However, it has been known since times of old that the surest way to generate business is to throw out your patterns. Immediately the phone begins to ring with old customers wanting another sign JUST LIKE the one you did last time.

Another option might be to roll them up and stuff them inside vinyl roll cores. Your supplier might have 48" cores available?

Grundy took the words right out of my mouth. Hang the cores from the ceiling where they won't be in the way. Number them and make a spread sheet with contents of each core.

For the really long ones 3" PVC pipe works well.

Good point Don...PVC is relatively inexpensive and can be cut to the length that is needed.

So many options,,,,,,I like the core thing,,,,I'm thinking something along the lines of a "Wine Rack" but for patten storage. Gonna need a bunch of duct tape!

I have a lot of paper patterns also. They are stuffed inside empty vinyl tubes as others have said.

Just can't get rid of them.

I have fifty years of saved patterns. Few will ever be used again. I look through some of them on rare occasion when I need one and the trip down memory lane can last the day. Those things can be dangerous.

I have bins sectioned off for categories. I have one for trucks, one for boats, store fronts, etc. I have another section for long ones. They take up space like the rack for small random beautiful wood scraps that seem way too nice to ever burn.

All of which makes me very glad I don't keep a collection of old trucks.
