We are repainting the faces of 2 carved,HDU signs that are approx.15 years old. They were mounted back to back with 1/2" plywood in the middle, screws went into the plywood for side mounting between posts. Over the years the plywood rotted and broke apart.

We scraped off the layers of plywood down to the back of the HDU, which has yellow adhesive on it (contact cement?). We are ready to replace the plywood but not sure what material and adhesive to use, plywwod again or a better option? What adhesive is best to use to bond the mounting panel to the back of the HDU? Any advice would be appreciated.

I use Gorilla Glue for plywood and HDU....works great.

I would not use plywood, or any wood. I think it would be best to create a space in between the signs and add some square tubing that runs horizontal then bolts to the posts. You can sandwich the square tubing with more hdu. I would only use Gorilla Glue or the PB 240 adhesive made for HDU. Sandwich everything together, spread glue and clamp it all up.

For two sided signs, I've used aluminum extrusions, glued inside a horizontal dado groove between two sheets of HDU laminated together. For one sided signs, we laminate the HDU to a sheet of .080 aluminum with West Systems Epoxy and stainless steel wood screws. No failures yet with either. I never use anything that rots with HDU.

This two sided one, has the extrusions sandwiched between two sheets...

This one has only HDU "backer boards" laminated to the HDU panel with Gorilla Glue. The posts were then lag-screwed to the backer boards....

This one has the .080 aluminum backer laminated on with studs sticking out the back. The studs were then pushed into oversized holes in the brick filled with silicone. No wood with HDU, at least here in Florida where it's nasty, hot and humid.
