I love to use negative space in the dimensional signs I create. But the negative space as I define it is just that - nothing. Holes in signs are very effective and really make this kind of sign stand out.

One of the signs we are doing now is a good example. Bucky the beaver is on a swing and the name of the amusement ride is on a donut around him. In the design he faces forward but the sign turned out to be double sided and hung as a blade sign so we had to switch things up a little.

 -

I routed the double sided donut from 30 lb Precision Board and then we welded up a quick pencil rod armature. This defined the position and pose of the figure in a few minutes.

 -

Then I layered on the Abracadabra sculpt and bulked the figure out with crumpled tinfoil. It didn't take long to create the form I was looking for.

 -

By quitting time today to figure was pretty much as I wanted him and the top half had all of his detail. I had about four hours of time invested. One more half day will easily finish him and then we are on to paint.

That's really cool Dan!

I'm about to start work on a cartoon moose for a "Man Cave" sign.

Quick question: On the flat sculpt - in this case the tail on your beaver (and the ears on my moose) do you lay the majic sculpt over tinfoil or just flatten out the sculpt and shape it?

Does laying m-sculpt over foil help to hold the shape?

The tail has a piece of diamond lath in it tha is a teeny bit smaller. I put a thin coat of sculpt on and let it dry, then a finish coat with the detail.

Of course.

I love seeing pictures from you Dan, not just the project you are working on but all the samples on the walls in the background.

Love your shop!

The copy needs more negative space around it.
