My brother has some airplanes and wants to put some striping and call letters on them. What type of vinyl should I use? Will metallic vinyl hold up? Do I need to edge seal?
Would it be better to make a paint mask and paint it on? What kind of paint should I use? Any advise is greatly appreciated.

I have put small decals on a corporate jet in 2 mil vinyl. No edge seal and no problems. Jets fly higher and faster that small prop planes.

Any quality cast vinyl will work fine.

If you prefer paint, I'd recommend Ronan lettering enamels (and OneShot once PPG fixes it).

Thank you. How well do metalic vinyls hold up?

In general, metallic cast vinyl doesn't hold up as well as traditional cast vinyls. Most metallic films that I'm aware of are rated for 5 years outdoors.

Do it right..... mask, and paint.
Having said that, Merlin's Magic P-51 raced at Reno and the number were 3m black "High Speed" vinylbut having said That, they were meant to come off after the race. Any time I did something permanent I did it in paint!

there was a world setting land speed vehicle, had vinyl applied to it. on one of the runs the vinyl peeled off and they had to find a sign painter to paint all of the sponsors back on it.

Paint it will be. I will have to mask it first.

i just drove by a hanging lighted pan face sign i didi think in 2006. reason i say 2006 is i lost most of 2006 in my quicken due to a hard drive crash. the vinyl i use on it was SHINE-RITE from FELLERS. intermediate vinyl, red, exposed to direct southern sun............its 7 years old and is starting to show some cracks on the south face, north face is still perfect.
