This one will hopefully be cheaper, simpler and easier to build than the wood one. I have three heavy 13' 6.5" x8" I-beams with 3/4" 12" x12" steel plates welded on one end. I could stand these up with a backhoe and will not need a crane truck or drill rig to dig the foundation. 20 years ago, I probably would have tried it with a shovel [Eek!]

My calculations for a 125 mile wind velocity, call for only 3 yards of concrete, simply because this sign would be only 13' above grade instead of 18' for the wood design which specified 5 yards. But here' I have it drawn with 3- 4'x4'x3' foundations making it 5.33 yards or almost 11 tons of concrete. Overkill should make the engineer and the building inspectors satisfied with it. We'll see. But he may require guy wires on this one too. That would sure be ugly. You can only see 6 but there would be 12 1" thick anchor bolts holding it to the foundations.

Anyway, these I-Beams are not galvanized so would need blasting, priming and painting. But I would like to make the frames out of galvanized steel. What type.guage is normally used? C channel? Rectangular tubing? I would need about 224' of it.
Thanks
