Starting to use PPG Envirobase Water now for most of our jobs but I haven't had to stripe over any yet (under the clear). I know how clear reacts with it and can make that work but it's always been on a solvent base coat.

I was just wondering if anyone has had to pinstripe on waterbourne base coat (under the clear) and if there are any bad reactions?... other than the normal reactions you can get when inappropriately applying clear. FYI, I always add an acrylic hardener to the 1shot when it's going to be cleared.

To be on the safe side throw a coat of clear on it before you stripe it.

I did a lot of clearing over One Shot back in the eighties when the urethane clears first started getting popular. I witnessed every possible mishap til I met a custom painter/sign artist by the name of Bob Aton. He was doing a lot of clearing over One Shot with great success. He told me one of the keys was to letter on the same type of paint as what you would be clearing with..ie. urethane over urethane. I went back over my notes ( I was actually keeping records of failures and successes back then ) and noticed a large number of failures came when I lettered over something other than what was being used for clearing.
An added benifit to clearing before you stripe/letter is if you mess up you can wipe with out damaging anything.
I can't say for sure if you would have any trouble just striping over the water based or not but why chance it?

Last time I checked, the clears were still solvent-based. Is that not still true, Kelsey?

If so, your procedure would be the same. I think George had a good suggestion.

Yes the clears, primers, sealers are all still solvent based. I have never had a customer have a problem clearing my striping when they follow my instructions of dusting the first couple of coats of clear with plenty of flash time in between.

I was just certified to use the PPG Waterbourne but when I asked the instructor about the pinstriping he just gave me a funny look and said they can't guarantee it after that.

I guess this will be one of those things I just need to do a sample piece. If anyone else has any info or experience with this please feel free to chime in.

Have you tried to stripe with the waterborne? I know a lot of basecoats will stripe well.

I just striped a 69 Camaro, but like what was said above, I had them clear first, then a few dust coats, then regular coats, it came out flawless... the Car is a show stopper!

I don't like striping over raw basecoat..... can't fix a mistake easily... however that is with solvent basecoats. I don't know if you can wipe something off of waterborne without any ill effects. I recommend doing a sample.....
