Earlier this week I informed Janis that we needed to buy a new metal cutoff saw. It could be put off no longer. The two old ones I owned were very ancient and had been severely cannibalized to keep my last operational one running. But at long last it too had given up the ghost. Noe were worth rebuilding with new parts. All were leftovers from when we had a large crew, more than a decade ago. It was time for a new one at last. I started doing my research online and found good quality saws were not cheap. Janis' visiting uncle suggested a tool store just across the border in the USA as he had found their prices were very reasonable. I looked it up and they were indeed much less money for the very same tools. I brought my findings to Janis and she agreed we should take a trip to the States.
In looking up the regulations for avoiding duty we found we needed to stay 48 hours. So the discussion turned at this point to us enjoying a mini holiday... but neither of us were particularly fond of the idea of shopping and sight seeing for two whole days. The more we thought about it the more we got into the mood. We hadn't had a holiday in quite a while. We wondered if it was possible to instead head a little further south to our favorite place - in the name of research and inspiration of course. So we looked up the price of air flights to Disneyland... and found an amazing seat sale. Reasonable room rates were also located. The few days quickly turned into a week... just to make it worthwhile.
As luck would have it, being as we were booking t the last minute, the only flights we could get left on a Saturday and came back the following Saturday. Oh well, it worked for us. The arrangements were made. We needed a holiday... er working trip.
Eventually the subject came back to the cutoff saw. It turns out the tool store is closed on Saturdays - the days of our coming and going to the airport near the tool store. We wouldn't be able to buy the saw on our trip after all. But we decided it wasn't a big deal. We have plenty to do before the trip and since we will be gone for a week the saw has no big rush. We'll think about that saw when we get back.

Sounds kinda complicated Dan. FYI, business purchases are not allowed as part of your personal exemption and unless the tool is manufactured in the U.S. (which is unlikely), it won't be eligible for importation under the NAFTA agreement. It amazes me how many messages and emails I've been getting to help me solve this dilemma. It all sounds waaaaay too complicated for me... especially as we are now very busy getting ready to go to Disneyland. I think we may just have to forget about the saw for now and just enjoy this trip instead. In fact I've almost forgotten about the saw already. I think I'll go out in the sunshine and mow our lawn one more time. It's going to grow unattended for the next week after all.
I'll worry about the saw when we get back.

I say Order the Saw.. Have it delivered to me and I'll let you know how well it works.. Then I'll bring it to WI. That when you go back across the Border.. It's a tool you brought with you for work.

What's the matter with the old saws? Did they wear out so much that they started cutting straight and square?

The table saw was replaced a while back and the old chop saw was in about the same condition. It blew the breaker about every fourth cut and elicited many a growl in the process.
I appreciate all the helpful suggestions and will take them under advisement. Imagine how happy I will be after a week at Disneyland with Janis (business trip) AND a new saw to boot.

Order the saw from Disney and have it shipped. You've still stayed the allotted time and you get your new toy. Mother Hen advice over and out.
Now what I REALLY want to know (and 101 other dudes on this site) is how you managed to wrangle a trip out of the need for a work inducing requirement! You're more brilliant than I even realized...

I like your thinking- forget about the saw and just put on some mouse ears- something there will spark some new ideas that will require new tools you haven't even thought of yet...
