One of my computers runs WinXp. Recently I had a Norton announcement that it had a detected a virus named "Tojan Horse" but they it was unable to do anything with it. I have scanned the entire system with Norton and some others were found but were taken care of.
Now, what do I do? Any suggestions?
Also, I have been receiving an unusually high number of junk e-mails and pop-ups since this virus was detected. Are these two problems related? Will solving one eliminate the other?

Norton will rarely leave a file without doing anything to it, odds are Norton put this file in Quarantine.
In my version of software, you would go into the main window then goto 'View' from there you can view the quarantined items. Update your virus definitions and Norton should ask if you want to re-scan your quarantined items (to attempt to clean the file). Also check out what file it is and unless its an important piece of data just delete it.
Quarantine locks the file so it can no longer be accessed or cause havoc and items can pretty much stay in quarantine forever, but it is a good practice to clean it out, and definately keep those definitions up to date! Norton usually updates every Wednesday unless something big has hit before then.

I have gotten some messages that indicated a virus in my system too. I have found these to be popups from somewhere. Almost always they lead to some website trying to sell virus software. I hate that stuff!

Raymond, same problem here. The interesting thing is that I use AVG and my messages are the same. I am told that the pop-up IS the virus and not to open it, just close it by using the X. Don't know if that info is correct, but when scanned with AVG the virus shows up in the LYCOS folder and I canot delete the darned thing.
Yesterday I had 102 e-mails. We paid for our machines and we feed them. For me it is like having an intruder come in and it makes me angry. A while back each time I got on the net some goofy page had installed itself and both my cd and dvd-rom drives would open. If some one came in and did that in person I would be tempted to slap their hands.

AVG - that's AntiVir, right? I just uninstalled Norton this morning and replaced it with this on the advice of someone I trust in computer stuff. He said that it catches stuff that Norton doesn't... and lo and behold with the first scan I caught 3 things that Norton missed!
My computer is running lots better now.

You also need a firewall and a router.
Anti virus is not enuf because your computer has certain ports always open by default. And that is where problems enter.
Also if you are running XP you may turn off MS Messenger not to be confused with MSN Messenger. It is a direct ppup link into your machine and confuses so many because it suddenly pops up onto your screen.
A router stealths your machine from the net and your firewall keeps out the rest.
At one time I only had a antivirus becaue all I had was dialup. Got high speed and the firewall it showed how many of the dozons of probes per day. Most of which are just low level noise on the net. Added a router which blocked a majority of those probes. The firewall got the remainder.

Yea... thanks again Steve! Only thing is, I don't know how to check the registry.
I hate those stupid people with nothing better to do than screw up the stuff of people that have something better to do than try to figure out how to fix it.
