Hi all,

I have been doing regular size (7ft x 5ft) ad murals for a few years now. Now I have been asked to give a quote on a 36ft x 14ft (504ft2). They want a theme/interactive wall for the public but especialy trageted for kids. Intercative meaning i have to design elements on the wall (like e.g. Goal post for soccer etc..) so the kids can play and interact with. I will have the logos of both two sponsors on it also which i will incorporate in the design. They want a tropical theme with waves, blue sky, under water etc etc...
The question is: how much should i charge for a wall this size?

The wall is at the beach and facing east, so will be exposed to sun during the first hals of the day. I suppose i have to include pressure washing and wall sealer before i start painting.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thank you and much respect,

Garrick.

Welcome to Letterville Garrick!

You're proposing a tough question because there appears to be some details missing.

When you mention "interactive" and include terms like "goalposts" will these elements be painted or will it include an additional structure somehow mounted to the wall?

Also, what kind of shape is the wall in? Will it take a lot of time and effort to make it ready to accept paint? Is it easily accessible? How do you plan to work - from a scaffold or man-lift?

And, how detailed will the design be?

Anyway, shooting "from the hip", I would easily estimate $5,500 - $7,500 US or more for a decent painted mural. That would include design, some prep work on the wall to get it ready for paint and the mural itself. Any equipment rentals, major prep work and/or interactive features/structures would be an additional cost.

I am by no means an expert at murals though. So, don't take my advice too seriously [Smile]

I would also recommend stopping by in the Letterhead and Pinhead talk section and introduce yourself. You may get some better responses from the much more experienced pros.

Havin' fun,

Thanks for the quick reply Brian!

Yes you are right, I did leave out some important information.
The wall is straight expet for e segment at one end that goes partly (3feet deep) into a coral wall. The coralreef wall comes out at the bottom of the wall.
Because of the height of the wall (14ft) I would have to rent a boom lift for at least 2-3 days. This would be for the projection and tracing work in the beginning and also for filling up sky color transition in the upper half of the mural. For the rest I would need scafolding to finish up the rest of the wall.
With interaction i meant most elements will be painted (e.g. the goal poast) but, there is a part where the client wants a tube wave painted and a surfboard sticking out (most probably made of concrete) where people can stand on and take pictures. The design will include a plane draging a banner with one of the sponsors logos and a Ariballoon with the logo of the other sponsor on it and several other elements to entretain the public.

I would say the design would be of medium detail.
I have a tendancy to go high detail, so i'm gonna have to hold myself back on this one.

I charged 13,000 for everything including the concrete surfboard on the wave. (I am a little scared of that one since i haven't done antything like it before)
The client thinks its an astronomicaly high price but is willing to start with the design and wrok from there.

Thanks again for the response,

Garrick.

No problem Garrick, I'm glad I could help.

Overall, I think your price is fair for both you and the client. The one thing I have learned in many years in the sign industry is come clients think "free" is too much.

Enjoy the project and be sure to take pictures!!
