I received a phone call from my good friend Tom McIltrot at SignCraft magazine this past week. I was saddened to hear that the next issue will be the last printed magazine we will receive. SignCraft magazine is the latest casualty of the changing times of internet and more recently the COVID pandemic.
The good news is that we will still be able to read those great stories and see those awesome pictures of signs online.
SignCraftwww.signcraft.com Our subscription will allow us to keep informed and inspired - as always. Best of all we won't have to wait two months for the next instalment, as new articles and pictures will be regularly uploaded to the site. I checked immediately and my subscription is good until 2025!
I sure appreciate all of the wonderful articles I've read through the years. Tom and his associates have undoubtedly raised the bar and inspired many with their publication. That, thankfully will not be changed by this new online chapter of SignCraft.
The world around us is constantly changing without a doubt, sometimes hastened on by unbelievable events like which we are currently experiencing. We can embrace it or rail against it. I suspect it is going to be what it will be regardless. But the good news is that we can make a positive difference to those we personally interact with, hopefully making their lives better in the process.
It has been a challenging time in our shop these last eight months. While the phone keeps ringing and I am busy at my design board, getting people to commit to exciting and fun projects has been challenging, to say the least.
I still go out to the shop each day, planning and getting ready for the next exciting project. We keep very busy on our personal projects which will deliberately position us for the good times when they come and they will.
It seems, like always, Janis & I worry about the same things in opposite ways. As I look at the big list of pending projects for the upcoming year and beyond I concern myself about how we will do all of that wonderful work on time. Janis frets about which ones might be cancelled or postponed (as sometimes happens). In the end I know it will all work out. It always has for more than fifty years - so far.

I’ve pretty much gotten away from print reading. I read newspapers and books online now. Even My Woodsmith magazine which comes by mail and online, I read online with my iPad . I have stacks of back issues taking up space in my library. I am looking forward to the new format and instant contact. I anticipate more interaction with subscribers. It’s a huge undertaking for Tom and the crew, but it will ensure we stay connected for years to come. The final issue will indeed be a collector item.

I will miss it. I subscribed in 1980, when I had very little experience painting signs. I do still like printed material. I often take out old issues and thumb through them. I guess I can still do that. Times have sure changed.

For Me, I am Excited to see the Online Issue. Signcraft has always provided Quality. Whether it be a Technique, a Memory of a Friend, an Up-Coming Letterhead Meet, or Designs from around the World. I have spent a lot of Money and Time traveling the Country to Various Meets to Learn Our Craft. I got paid in: Knowledge, Technique's, Design, Color, Lay-Out, and most Importantly... Friends. Whatever the cost may be, I am Happy to pay the Price of Admission

I so glad I saved the last 10 years of Sign Craft. I so love sitting back turning pages and seeing how different sign makers approach a design and construction. Thank you to Tom at Sign Craft for such a wonderful publication and I look forward the On-Line Version, I think.
