Are the backs of the letters flat? The only double sided tape I use is that 3M VHB tape. It's killer stuff.

I use a small pad of the VHB on the pad and also use the adhesive. The tape gives an immediate bond while the adhesive sets. I have numerous letters applied with just tape on the inside walls of my shop and after a few years, they fail and require new tape.

The 3M medium bond tape (cream color) will fail after time. I did the same as Rick, installing some Gemini letters on my wall and they eventually fall off. So I tried the 3M VHB tape (5952) . Those will not fall off. In fact I had to pull a letter down to show a client a sample and it tore the paint and layer of the sheet rock right off the wall.
#5952 Incredible VHB strength guarantees a strong bond.
Soft conformable foam molds to irregular surfaces.
Bonds well to painted and powder coated metals and hard-to-stick plastics like polyethylene and silicone.
Temperature range is -40°F to 250°F.
Resists moisture, UV and solvents. Indoor/outdoor.
Black foam with acrylic adhesive; red polyethylene liner.
This stuff ain't cheap, around $124 for 1 inch by 36 yards But half or three quarter inch would be a lot cheaper and probably be wide enough.
