Do you have a scarey sign story? Here's mine. Okay, a long while back, I was lettering a dump truck at the customers yard. I went on the driver's side of my truck to get out my radio. I walked back to the rear of my truck and placed the radio on the open tailgate. A dump truck started backing up and came about 10 inches of my truck and where I had just walked from. It was going pretty fast. The truck dump boxes then slammed into some large trash comtainers. I got so mad! He almost ran me over, could have crushed me. The loud crashing noise caused the guys to come running out of the office. "What happened?" they said. I told them what happened and how I also most got crushed. But no one was in the dump truck! What happened is that the owner's father had parked the truck and forgot to set the parking brake. So it just rolled off on it's own. That's my scarey sign story for Holloween.

Okay, here's another kinda scarey. I did some truck lettering work in Compton, Ca back around 1991. When I got with the job, the customers, who were black, told me not to stop anywhere on the way home. Just to go straight to the freeway and head home.

OK. My former partner in my first sign shop, back in 1980 or so, had to go to a funeral home to change the spelling on some dead guy's showcard display that was set up in front of the open casket. He had copied it correctly from what they gave us, but there was some minor and obvious mistake from the facts, it seemed.

So he is in there changing it and the Funeral Director tells him someone wants to come in the view the body. Yikes. He stands behind the tall arrangement of flowers and shrubbery with his maul stick and paint palette. Lo and behold the couple comes in and starts blubbering and crying profusely in remorse and kept at it for many minutes. He is standing back there, hiding, hoping they would not see him. Suddenly he feels a sneeze coming on, uncontrollably. Sure that the couple would mistake his sneeze for the dead guy's, he held it in as long as he could and then blurted one out. The couple was mortified when they noticed this guy holding a maul stick and brush, thinking it must be part of the embalming equipment. He excused himself and exited stage right. The next day the director called, vociferously complained, but added he needed another showcard, please. We managed somehow, but the poor couple who were stunned, thinking their beloved had sneezed, probably never got over their grief and dismay..probably thought the body had come back to life. SIGN ZOMBIES!!!!

Today we celebrated Halloween in the shop. When I came out of my office to greet my crew they were all standing in a row. They had decided to all dress like me for the occasion. It was very scary!

What's scary is the size of the feet on the kid on the left.
