Crazy!!!!!! Some college engineering bunch, built a driveable car; they're making exact copies of peoples' bones for replacement; on NCIS LA, last week, they had a room-size printer that reproduced a crime scene, with life-size bodies; they have printers that use powdered metal and a laser to print/weld solid parts together. The manufacturer said they can be easily printed, while traditional machining would involve several steps and greatly increased costs.
This is some of the fastest developing technologies I've ever seen. There seems to be almost no limits to what can be done. I expect to see them in our profession, in a big way, some day soon.
I suppose that the furniture industry, also, is taking advantage of this new concept, as well as many other industries that assemble other products........There goes another bunch of jobs down the drain.......Just like, us, the sign painters.

nope......as in hand lettering, pottery will alway be a "hands on" to get true artistic pieces. as you do now there are cups/plates/bowls/tea pots you can buy that are mold made or done in what are "ceramics" shops. hand built pottery......has and will always be.......at he top of this form...as long as people see it as "art."

Way more fun using your own hands with a potters wheel. Same as with my cnc router. Cranks out signs and sculptures, but it's much more fun to carve by hand.
About that house... okay, they printed a $5,000 bedroom. When you print the rest of the house you'll be right up there in the $100,000 range. I could see where it could print in the plumbing, but what about the electric lines? That's a house for Chinese sweatshop workers making $1.25 a day.

3D printing is not new. I saw it in use 26 years ago. In fact lots of the early patents have expired allowing other companies to build competing units.
3D printing is very S L O W and the materials are not all that good for real products.
It is great for prototypes but will not be used for mass production.

It's only a matter of time, Diane. It is rather slow' by mass production standards; but different techniques and different types of print heads are evolving every day.
Materials are being used now, like titanium, that are very solid and very strong; being laser welded, just as they are printed.
The medical profession is using them to make replacement bones, eye sockets and various other hard body parts that have been crushed, broken or lost for whatever reason. The aerospace industry uses them. Many components that would require several pieces of machinery, and extremely delicate procedures to produce, are now being printed easier and less costly.
It's still in it's infancy; but due to technology that was not available back in the 80's, 3D printing will find an unending variety of uses in the very near future.
