We're ready to order Gemini six inch Minnesota letters in Times bold for a building.
The building name is:
FRANK J. VANLAANEN MEMORIAL COMPLEX
This is going to be a surprise to the heirs of Frank so they cannot ask the family. The normal spelling of the last name would be VanLaanen, the board wants all upper case letters. Is there a proper, or if not proper, the most popular way to do this. They wondered about a small space between the "N" and the "L". I offered the suggestion of 6 inch upper case letters with the A and N in 4 inch upper case letters. [Confused] Any suggestions would be helpful.

I recently had a very similar job. The difference between 4 and 6" is too much. The small space would look better, I think.

That is difficult without being able to ask the family how they would want it. Maybe there's a close family friend you could ask, that would keep quiet about it?

Maybe the F J V L M C in 6 inch uppercase.
and the "RANK AN AANEN EMORIAL OMPLEX" in 4 inch uppercase?

Dave,

First, talk to Frank's secretary ( or his wife ) and find out how he writes his name....get it in writing and have her sign it.

Second, show the signed document to the person paying you for the job....Get his/her signature, also, on the same document that Frank's secretary or wife wrote and signed.

Third, by all means, do not improvise and do not even attempt to spell, that name, just how you think it should be spelled....Just write ( spell ) it like these two persons told you.

Now, that you have placed the responsibility of the spelling, of the name, on those two other persons, you are free of guilt and, in the eventuality of a screw up, you will be able to get paid for the job.

This advise is free of charge, Dave........Please don't ask me why I know this.

Okay, I won't ask Ricardo. First off, Frank is dead. I don't think he has a secretary any more. [Roll Eyes] He was the driving force behind getting a no kill animal shelter going in our county. His son comes to visit a lot and they want to dedicate the building to his father. Anyway, I got a signed PO with using the small space idea. I also did not like the 4 inch "an". Too bad they don't make a 5 inch, that might have looked okay.

Another way would be to have the AN laser cut from the same thickness in 5" or 5.5" and painted the same color.

Dave,

You mean that his secretary and his wife, both, died?....Gee, I am so sorry....I thought they were, still, alive.

Well, Dave, in case you hadn't noticed, that means that you are going up the creek without a paddle.

However, I am sure that you will figure it out.....Good luck and, by all means, please, let us know how you resolved this dilemma.

OOOOPS !!......I guess I found the same website that Tony found.......So, it is settled......This is how you spell Vanlaanen......Which, only leaves you the with the problem of finding the right size for only ONE letter.........the "V".

They went with all caps and a slight space. There must have either been a lot of Frank Van Laanen's or the guy got married a LOT. Listed spouses for Frank VanLaanen; Rose, Caroline, May, Gertrude, Mabel, Roga, & Catherine. Wow.
