..........and sometimes I just hate this business...

quote:
Wayne,
I have not forgotten about my name riders and will be by soon to pick them up. I need them because I got my first listing and will put it on the company sign.
My request is this: I found a company that helps Realtors with marketing and they need the XXXXXXXXXXX graphic that you have for my business cards that you made for me. If you could please send it to: xxxxxx@getcreativepc.com
I have had some good comments on the shirts you made for me and I told them where I got them. Maybe you can get a few deals from it.
Have a good day,
xxxxxx

Really? I had to BUILD that logo from scratch and you want me to hand it over to another company so they can undercut me with less effort? [Bash] Some things just never change.

I think we all have this problem sometimes.
Lately it's been for phone book ads, t-shirts, and once in a while for a race car.

Hopefully you charged them some design time for the logo when you made the cards?

If it's a good customer, I would probably send it with no worries.

A pita customer would probably get a fairly low res jpg...one that won't just scale up for easy printing without pixelating.

Or you could tell them: "Sorry, our policy is not to give out my job files. We can however, put several formats of the artwork on a disc for you at a cost of $225(?). Then it's yours, and you will have it for the phone book ad, brochures, etc..."

p.s. I have plenty of forgetful customers too. I don't know how they can be in such a hurry for something...and then forget to come get it for a week or three.

Or "forget" to come and pay you for what you've done, for 2 or 3 weeks.........or more.

I did some signs last week for a new client.

We needed some shutterstock images and I explained to her that if she were to purchase them, then she could send me copies to use for her signs and still have them to use for any other advertising ( website, business cards, flyers etc.).

If I purchase them, then they become property of B.S.D and I would charge everytime I was asked to forward the images to to the newspaper, web designer, printer etc.

She seemed fine with this and purchased the photos herself, saving me time & money up front to get her job done.

We've all been there Wayne.

We have to think like the banks do - charge for every little thing; anything that takes time & effort is worth renumeration!

I still love it. Even when as ysterday, when asked for vector art files, I get silence from a local print/commercial art designer. I tried to call, but she don't pick up the phone. She likes email. The email customer is becoming the newest problem. On the other hand, the email customer is the easiest to ignore. "I'm in the shop/job site working"

No, I'm not kidding. Whenever I'm asked to do a local yokel's 'logo', I get a low res jpg if I'm lucky. Then after I've had to rebuild it piece by piece with my vector software, using skills that it took me many hours to master, why should I hand it over a product that I normally would charge for, to my competitor so he can undercut my price with my help? [I Don t Know]

I charged this guy $119 for some business cards, putting his photograph on the card design, and using my vector file of the realtor's logo, a loyal customer (this guy is just an agent shopping for the cheapest price apparently). If I just hand the design to the other company, they don't have to do all that; just chuck my design in and go.

When you design someone a logo, you should charge the customer for it, then give them a vector file, such as an EPS, on disk, email, jump drive, SD card, whatever, then they can take it wherever they want and everyone can reproduce it exactly every time, and doesn't have to scan someone's business card or autotrace their Jpeg. Then the guy who DOES take the time to build vector files, doesn't have to pass them on for free. Then everyone would be happy. [Smile]

i did some work for a race track on the fla. al. border.........guy was long time friend. called me and said he needed vinyl cut for a 4 X 10 plexi face sign. told him it required translucent vinyl(5 colors)was ok with giving me the money to buy it. i asked for art work.....guy also did t-shrits, so he knows about vector vs bitmap. sends me a 72 dpi jpeg. ok...i rebuild the whole thing, made so i can cut the colors at size needed. i cut it all he comes and picks it up......calls and askes where is the vinyl for the other side?
YA DUMB ARSE..you didnt tell me to make it twice......ok, got more vinyl got it cut he did the install. couple years later he calls, want me to send the VECTOR GRAPHIC to a shop right down the road........as somebody was providing a truck for the track and this other shop was gona put the logo on the truck. told him it would be cheaper if they brought me the truck...well no cant do that the truck guy uses this other shop exclusively....and i said ok for me to send the VECTOR LOGO I BUILT.will cost you $300.00!!!!1 he hasnt spoke to me since then))))))never paud the $300.00 either.....the other shop had to make it from scratch))))))))))))))

It is easier to just explain the the files deteriorate and they have to be redrawn for some fee. One time fee for a one time use. Simple nuff.
