I was searching the archives of Letterville for something else and came across this old post about desktop printers...

I Gotta Shake my Head in Wonder

That post was from way back in 2009 and the printer I was referring to as a "throw-away" is still working perfectly!!!

I found affordable cartridges and they seem to last a long time. I go through about one cartridge a year here.

What amazes me is that a $40 printer has lasted for 5 years in the heat, humidity, salt air of this area!

Another kudo to Canon...They seem to make pretty good printers and scanners and cameras from my experience.

(BTW the s300 Canon printer in Canada that I referred to as old in the original post is STILL working just fine too!!!) [Smile]

Hey Dave, there is still ONE S300, brand new, in the box, available for the low low price of only $179.99 on eBay. Wow 5 years later only 400% plus for inflation.

I am proud to say I bought a HP-5mp Laser Printer back in the fall of 1994 and it is used just about every day of our work week.
It is the only piece left of equipment that has been with me since the beginning and it will follow me through till the end.

Great to hear Sam!!! If you have a piece of equipment that has worked for 20 years, why wouldn't you keep it until it dies!!! That is why I like the stuff I have too.

Unfortunately, my Logitech wireless optical mouse that I loved, started giving me problems after 10 years. Probably full of guck from my sweaty hands and humidity and salt air and stuff. I had a friend buy and haul down a nice new Logitech wireless laser mouse and he delivered it to me today.

What a nice improvement!!! I HAD to try it out on various surfaces. It tracks fine on a wooden table, a towel, a stucco wall, tile floor, my t-shirt, even on my left palm. (Doesn't track at all on a mirror though, yeah, I had to try and see if it would!! LOL)

BUT the thing is...I stuck with a brand that had served me well, "mouse-wise" for many years.

Just like my Canon products and just like you are happy with your HP laser printer.

Stick with what you have good luck with and keep them till they die!!! [Smile]

Dave.... I can't say I've had as good luck with Canon... my third one just quit for no obvious reason at the 2 year mark for me... almost like that 2 year expiry is programmed into it's circuitry.

There was no diminished quality anything like that and suddenly I get the infamous B200 error message which according to my research is not worth the effort or expense to repair as even replacing the head is not a guaranteed fix.

I liked the Canons for their separate ink tanks but after 3 Canons quitting in 7 years I've had it with the brand.

So I'm in the hunt for a new printer for proofs and general office use and I'm canvassing opinions and recommendations. Online research indicates every manufacturer out there seems to have it's detractors.

And yes I have faithfully used their proprietary ink since it was suggested that using off-brand ink refills may have been the reason my first one quit.

I have a 1995 Roland cutter, a 1997 HP LaserJet 5000 laser printer, a 1998 Canon Scanner, a 2002 Dell computer, and a 2006 iMac- I guess quality control messed up on these devices because they just keep going... I can't say the same for a few other devices that have come and gone with the wind like they are designing them to do.

Still using a 2004 Dell PC running XP for the internet here, simply because it works, and using M$ Word & Excel 2000 for the same reason. We have a file converter for any files sent in the DocX format.
A newer faster PC wouldn't help the internet show up any better here anyhow.

I tried to use Word07 or 011 on one of the kids PCs the other day and could not figure it out at all!(I hate that program anyhow, but it is amazing how they have changed the interface so much, yet it still essentially does the same thing as it always used to do, with glitches & effort...)

Also using Lexmark laser printers from the 1990s - they were built to last, and are cheap to run, even if they are the size of a small refirgerator!

[Big Grin] [Big Grin] I agree with that Ian. Here in our area of Mexico, internet is considered "fast" if you can get a reliable 2 meg download speed. And the fastest, newest computer won't help that situation.

BUT, what I do know is that the laptops we use here, which are pretty much state of the art, are way faster than any desktop I used to use 4 or 5 years ago. When CorelDraw does it's auto-backup it is just a quick blink instead of a 5-10 second process no matter how complicated the drawing.

I just got off a Skype call with my brother in Jocotepec, Jalisco, Mexico. He says they have 3G service where he's at but 4 of the Gs are on vacation. A faster PC won't help him either.

I almost choked on my drink when I read that report!!!! [Rolling On The Floor] [Rolling On The Floor]

It is sooo true.

We have our regular local internet provider, then we have a Telcel 3G internet receiver that is cell based as a back-up, THEN we also have an Iusacel wireless internet card that is the back-up to the back-up!!!

Yeah it costs a few bucks to maintain our internet connection, but it is a small price to pay for not having to see any snow!!

How does your brother like Jocotepec?
