One of the items on my list today is to scrape a gold job off three bank windows. These windows are outlined burnished gold with an abalone panel. The job was all done by hand and the abs were shells that I dove for. I think I put the shell on with cyanoacrylate rather than varnish though. I don't know how that stuff will clean off the glass. Any tricks?

I've scraped Locktite 604 off glass OK. It's a superglue type cyanoacrylate made for 'difficult to adhere' surfaces. You just need a good glass or window scraper - but it also depends on what sort of 'tooth' the glue had upon the old glass.
If worst comes to worst, you can get pumice, cerium oxide, or other glass polishing products to bring the sheen and clarity back into the glass after you get the glue and whatever issues it's caused, off.

Ian, after I get the leaf and pearl off, I am doing a name change in white vinyl. So, if there is some clarity loss, I may well be able to hide it. Sad to sadder.

'Modernisation'...they might call it. Like the honour boards I have here-originally hand lettered in size & leaf, then changed to 24 ct signgold/vinyl, (by someone else) and I now have to continue to use the signgold on 2 of them.
The third one is almost full, so they've asked me to remove the gold vinyl & finish the last 6 names by hand... at least there's some consistency then!
And they are thinking of 'What happens when we can't get someone to do it by hand...'

When I came into this game every bank had gold on the windows and doors. Not just the bank name, but the names of the officers and the banks assets. I can't think of a bank with gold on the windows within a hundred mile of here. Seems that sticky back stuff has gained control. I find that sad.

I would be inclined to just replace the glass- keep the sign on it, frame it and make it into a nice interior decorative piece (which would probably sell for several times what a new piece of glass would cost) - then put a new piece of glass in with the current vinyl or whatever...
Several high end antique shops around here have old glass signs that someone just discarded... they have large $$$ on them now.

the retiring bank manager from before the merger was talking about keeping one of the windows. All the windows and doors are some special level of security glass and double paned. Replacing the glass would be rather costly.

Is fingernail polish remover acetone? Cuz that cuts thru super glue.
I was at Jordans shop a couple of weeks ago, lots of GL letterhead projects. Leaf is just for fun any more.

It all came off with a sharp single edged blade in my favorite gold trimmer made long ago by Kent Smith. All turned to powder that might twinkle in their carpet for years to come. The vacuum only got a bit of it up.
