When you guys need to pay someone for help once in a while, what should a days pay be for general grunt help? I think $125 a day sounds about right.

That sounds very fair, depending on the skill and expertise of the helper.
I have a guy who is a carpenter/electrician/plumber that I have known for years and I sometimes hire him to help me with big installations. I usually throw him $250 for about a day of help, but he is well worth every penny. I have another guy who is a young guy with not as much experience who sometimes helps me when available. He charges me around $15 an hour and I always tip him up to keep him around. Last time, he helped me for five hours and I gave him $125, so your rate sounds fair. You pay for what you get, I have found out.
