A contractor, bidding on the restoration of a storefront/facade, has asked me to quote on repainting the old signs. A 5'x1', 2 sided one hangs under the awning and a 2'x3' with a fancy shape is mounted flat to the wall. They are handpainted on MDO and really in pretty good shape. Washing them would improve alot but, I suppose they might stand a little freshening up. I figured about $325 to repaint them both. What do ya think? I don't do these too often; is that about right? Thanks

I have done many similar projects like this for an apartment complex. The last phase a year ago. I kept track of my time and I would bid these around $400 each. If the MDo looks good, it always looks worse back at the shop, for some reason, so it is best to simply recut new material and pattern off the old signs, ergo maybe $450 each with new materials. If they are real easy, maybe $100 less?
I had a guy call me up with an 8' long by 30" sign that was on poles. He did not want to take it down. I ended up replacing it with a new sign for less than what it would take to get up there and struggle with the height. $750 and he got a better made and better material sign in that aluminum clad sign ply. Then I used the 18x96" scrap for two other signs for another project.
I also had one last year that was just a 24x24 sign on a building, eyelevel. I used tracing paper and made a pattern before I recoated it out in new tan lettering enam. Banged out the black and red letters the next day and double coated it in an hour and a half. Total time away was three hours. Charged him $550.
Seems like the key is to emphasize that hand work is no longer very available and that we are a lost art form. Mentioning that the long life will be much better than in vinyl, always gets the sale, it seems for me....plus they feel using some old guy with a maul stick is some kinda good karma!

I charge out at $100 plus tax an hour for brushwork and $140 + on the stripper. There are not many around that can even do brushwork anymore. If they don't want to pay the price I can always do it in vinyl for less and tell them don't complain when it fades though!
