Hi all, We just got a mural job decorating a galvanized barn. Would appreciate any advice on preparing the surface. Vinegar? washing it? we plan to use DTM paint. Thanks!

DTM? Whaz that? Sherwin Williams Metal Latex sticks well to galvanized metal, I hear. Have tried it, but really studyied it. Ask them about it, otherwise you might have to go with a zinc chromate primer? Might try theior website. I bet they have instant info about the issue, there.

Yes, Sherwin's Direct-To-Metal. Hunting around on the internet for more info, we are formulating this plan: power wash with diluted Dawn dishwashing liquid, then power wash with diluted white vinegar, then power rinse with water. Draw and paint.
Thanks for your responses! what do you think of this plan?

On smaller projects, I have washed with copper sulphate mixed in water, let sit over night and then washed with vinegar. After allowing it to dry, rinsed with water. Wiped down and spray painted with XIM and immediately sprayed with background color, while XIM was still tacky. Had excellent results. Old school, but it worked! I suppose that some newer paints should do the job, but I have little experience with them. Personally, when I'm in doubt, I go for the tried and true.
