Anyone care to share what they charge other shops for sandblasting HDU? I've had a couple of calls in the last 2 weeks from 3 shops in the area. We typically blast 2" 15lb, painted (no gold). I realize one answer is 'what the market allows' but just trying to get some real world experience.
Thx Scott

I use a 600# industrial pot with a 150 cfm rotary screw compressor and air supplied PPE. It's efficient ande fast, but setup takes time. An average sign would take around 2 to 3 hours to load the pot, set up the hoses, set up the PPE,do a safety/engine check, crank up the comnpressor, blast, and put everything away.....That's IF I were doing only one. By doing several at a time, it would take less time per sign.
If I were doing it, I would charge about $70/hr plus abrasive plus fuel(for the compressor).

Around here in San Diego it's about $5 to $6 a square foot. I will never pay someone "By the Hour"..... the last time I did....yep...they screwed me!

I guess I should have clarified...the requests were for finished signs. Start to finish. Some of these quick sign shops have the exposure and advertising power, but don't have a paintbrush in the shop I think!

For a finished sign ready to install we normally charge $100 a square foot (no gold leaf or posts). If it's extremely simple and easy to paint we may drop to $90 (especially if it is a regular customer).
Over the years we have done several jobs for other shops. Just recently one of our regular customers bought a ShopBot so that source of revenue is gone.
It's not something I like to do because the design is usually terrible and colors are sickening...but the money still pays the bills.
At least my name isn't on it.

John, I said 2 to 3 hours for an average sign. I was basing that "by the hour" on an average sized sign of about 24 sqft which, at your $6/sqft, comes to $144 to blast the sign. So by doing it at $70/hr, $144 comes to a little more than 2 hours pay. And, like I said, it's going toi take LESS time per sign to do a whole bunch of signs, than just one. But I guess you could adjust that to $4/sqft or something if you want to do it that way. Here's a 24sqft sign.......

My sqft price for finished HDU signs varies from $80 to $103 sqft for single side; double that for two sides. So a plain jane rectangle sign is less per square foot than one with all the bells and whistles. Gold leaf is extra.
My Redwood and cedar price varies from $100 to $130.75 sqft single side, 70% more for two sides. Gold leaf extra.

The smaller the sign is, the higer the sf price. A 18"x3' would be around $100 sf. a 3'x12' would be around $3000 ++++++
