This is a post I recieved! My pc is messed up, running on safe mode. Is this bogus or what????
Hi everyone,
Unfortunately a virus has been passed on to me through an address book virus which has also infected my address book. Since you are in my address book, you will probably find it in your computer, too. The virus(called jdbgmgr.exe) is not detected by Norton or McAfee Anti virus systems. It sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It is sent automatically by 'messenger' and by address book, whether or not you sent e-mail to your contacts. Basically you will pass it along unknowingly, as I did. I was sent this e-mail and am now passing it on to you as how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. Please do this. It's very simple to do and it took me less than a minute to complete.
1. Go to Start, then click your 'Find' or 'Search' Option
2. In the folder option, type the name 'jdbgmgr.exe'
3. Be sure to search your C drive and all the subfolders and any other drives you may have
4. Click 'Find Now' or 'Search'
5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name 'jdbgmgr.exe' DO NOT OPEN IT
6. Go to "Edit" (on the Menu Bar) and choose 'Select All' to highlight the file without opening it.
7. Now go to 'File' (on the Menu Bar) and select 'Delete'
That will send the virus to the recycle bin.
If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in your Address Book so that they may eradicate the virus from their own address books.
To do this:
1. Open a new e-mail message
2. Click on the icon 'Address Book' next to 'To'
3. Highlight every name and add to 'BCC'(Blind Carbon Copy)
4. Copy this message and 'paste' to e-mail.
This will affect everyone in your address book so send it now. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Rob, I went through this a few years ago where it was called the "teddy bear virus" it sounds like the same thing and it was a hoax last time and you need the file that you are deleting....if it is the same one. I for one am going to hold tight for a few days before deleting and look further into this. I will share what I find out but I bet someone here will know the answer and put it on here before I get back to you..... the file jdbgmgr is a windows file and if you remove it you will lost some features as (if i recall) long names file and such ...always check for hoaxes wend you receive those e-mails warning you about viruses ...
this one is ... that you mess your puter by yourself...

...And the reason for sending it BCC is so that some recipient who knows this is a hoax cannot warn everyone who got the message not to do this.
ALWAYS check on snopes.com or some other site to make sure before complying with the instructions in any email.
Lots of these things also ask you to empty your recycle bin so that you cannot retrieve the file and fix the problem.
A google search should turn up instructions on how to undo the damage. If you have emptied your recycle bin, Norton and other utilities may help you recover it.
I have NEVER received an urgent virus message that was legit. I haven't been victimized because I'm too skeptical to obey unsolicited instructions.
I update my virus definitions daily and run a complete scan every night. I don’t need virii, self inflicted or otherwise, to mess up my day. Bill Gates’ buggy nightmare is plenty enough trouble as it is.

When I fired up my home pc, the pc was running but nothing on the screen. I hold the start button to reboot, it comes back up with some kind of problem. Now it is in safe mode, even after restarting a few times. How do I get out of it???

Read here for details of this hoax along with instructions detailing what one should do should one have been impaired enough as to have followed the instructions in the hoax.

I wish this wasn't a hoax as it would explain the problems that I am having with 3 of my computers. I have posted messages before asking if there was a new virus out there that hasn't been detected by the anti virus programs. Someone led me to Ad-aware which I run at least weekly but that didn't help. I have all teh Windows Updates and all my definitions are up to date. I Loaded XP on two of them, re-formatting each time, and even put in new hard drives in the 2 desktops. I've re-formated my laptop and only loaded a few basic programs on it, only to have it slow down, lock up, etc.
These 3 computers are limping along and are definitely affecting my business. I am thinking about buying new computers but am afraid that it won't help. I brought in a new computer that I had built and was running great. My networking guy and I hooked it up and played around with it. It was running great and almost the minute we hooked it to the server, it started failing.

Its pretty hard to diagnose a comp problem from posts. But,
If ad aware and virus definitions are up to date then its highly unlikely you have a virus or some scumware running. Virus defs are updated fast within a day at most. If there is a problem after a few days with updates then very likely you have some other problem.
Problems on networks are common and usually related to some settings or a misconfigured application.
If you are on high speed internet you must have a firewall and a router for complete protection. Newer invasions are comming in through email, open ports and exploits.
Firewall closes ports, a router blocks exploits and acts as a firewall. You need both.

One of the best tools I have found is to scan your PC form outside your PC or network. The reason to do this is that if you have a virus, it some times will stop your virus software from working properly. Also not all virus can be removed by the software. you might need to remove it with a removal tool or manually. Here is a link that will allow you to scan your PC directly from Symantecs site. No Http:// or www. in the link, just type this." security.symantec.com " For fixing and checking my PC I use three programs Registry mechanic, PC bug Doctor and registry mechanic. They are inexpensive and do a great Job. Also one of the best for getting rid of addware is pest Patrol in my humble opinion. If you ever delet a system file, you can copy that file off another PC with the same OS and then copy it back.

If the description at the URL above fits but you are still having trouble, give some more specifics IE: Windows version, browser/email version, software affected or problems experienced. Oh yeah, when the computer boots and asks you if it should boot into Safe Mode, you can always use your directional keys (located between the alpha and numeric keyboard to select "normal" Good Luck, David

Just a little thing that we have always done is to have our working computers (the ones that make me money like the one that runs the plotter) we do not have any internet access on them ,as all of the junk that comes in from the web can bog you down, further more it keeps employees from doing their jobs, ever wonder how much time employees spend geeking out on the web??? I wouldn't even want to know how many hours I have paid for an employee to screw around.....

I had a tech come over to the shop & fix another problem I was having with the PC to printer communication, then we went home and the virus disabled the video something or other.
Luckily it was my home PC and not my shop PC.
What makes this virus so sneaky is, it looks like it is from somone you know with a picture attached.
The tech is going to come back and do some firewall, spam, virus protection later.

Matty..Thanks for the info on an external scan.
I tried it and sure enough I "had" the W32.Beagle.J@mm virus "on" my computer. It had come in on an e-mail and Norton (which is up to date and has automatic live update enabled) obviously didn't catch it at the time it arrived. I don't open the attachments in e-mails of the type it arrived in so I wasn't actully infected, but it was still there. (One advantage of Eudora e-mail client....attachments have to be manually opened)
Anyway..the outside scan found it, I downloaded the removal tool and everything if just fine.
Just fired up the networked laptop and going to run the same procedure on it.
