I'm trying to "spice up" this basic 4' x 16' flat sign. I've added 1/4" x 18" polished aluminum letters (polished, like bike hardware). The panels will be MDO, probably, to give me something to bolt the metal letters to. Now i'm thinking maybe I should put a slight bow in the panel (3 inches)...
So, the first question -- is bowing the panel just a bad idea?
Second, if I do bow it out, can I just cut down some 2x, and screw them to the framework and then screw the panels onto the frame, forcing it to the bow shape?
This is a $2500 project, so I want my customer to get their money's worth. They are moving into a larger shop, and this will be the second sign I've done for them. the first was 2' x 8' Dibond that I bowed, so this one sort of relates to the old one. the ammount of bowing is so slight that i don't know if its worth it, or if it will catch the light on the metal letters and be worthwhile.

fair question! convex in the horizontal. (the middle of the sign - lengthwise - will be 3" further from the wall than the ends.) if you look on the picture i posted, there is a black shape along the top of the picture that shows the sign in section.

First .. Bowing the panel is a good idea. It will "lift" your sign out of the ordinary flat job.
Second ... over 16ft, 3" bow is not going to show. Go at least twice that. Take it out a ft! Refer to the 3" bow you put in the 8ft one.
Third ... I would cut the bow shape outa mdo to make the frame. Not only will this support the sign along the length but fill in the gap top and bottom.
