Anyone have one of those charts that inform you the size of letter needed for the distance. I remember something like 3" letter can be seen from 40' but forgot the formula. I'm looking for something to be seen from about 500'. I know I should know this. but I don't remember, damn "partimers disease" kickin in..........

If somebody has a chart like this in cdr. or some other comman file, send it in and we'll make it downloadable for all. Same goes for outstanding business forms.
In the meantime I'd try this Cisco. A person with 20/20 vision can read a 1" letter from a distance of 25 feet. Do the math. Keep in mind that this is only readable. Bigger may be required for maximum impact.

I check my hardcopy notes because I had this puppy. I'll also check the NET on a couple of maybe's of where I think I originally found it. Maybe someone else will step up in the meantime, because it will be later tonite before I get back on the board.

Max Readable Dist Max Impact Letter Ht. 1250' 300' 30" 1500' 360' 36" 1750' 420' 42" 2000' 480' 48" 2250' 540' 54" 2500' 600' 60"
based on info provided by California Institute of Technology. Distances vary approx. 10% with various color combos. 5,280 feet equals one mile. Max distance in color would be Red or Black on White background.

The mid-July 1998 issue of Sign Business magazine has a section called Charts & Graphs that they describe as "Some helpful and quick-reference information for specifying sign projects." Included is a letter visibility chart and a color visibility chart. Their Letter Visibility Chart shows: Maximum Readable Distance Letter Readable for Maximum Impact Height Distance 100' 30' 3" 200' 60' 6" 350' 80' 8" 1,000' 240' 24" 1,500' 360' 36" 2,500' 600' 60"
(Distances vary approximately 10 percent by color. Studies were done using black letters on white background. A car traveling at 25 mph covers 2,200 feet per minute; at 35 mph 3,080 feet per minute)
I also saw another chart in SignCraft Mag. When I run across it I will try and post.

There are actually three "official" tables, there is one in the Gemini letter catalog, then there is the one from the article in Signcraft a few years back which I think is the best table. Then there is one more from a University.The Signcraft table as I recall was prepared by Australian letterheads who made up signs and did a field test.
I had all this tabulated in a Corel file but it is lost. I do have a hardcopy that I would be willing to fax to anyone interested. We are blssigns@verio.com.
