Just curious to see who else tracks their referrals. I used to just ask and keep in the back of my mind which method works.

We've been diligently recording each referral and have been slightly surprised with the outcome.

Let me know.....

& thanks!

We send out foll up surveys with a tracking number on each one just in case they do not fill in the return address. Asks questions about our price, service, and performance.

We keep a list (Works spreadsheet) of invocies monthly. One of the things we track on each invoice is new customers vs repeat. Actually code them 1..new, 2...second time, 3...third time, 4...fourth time and 5 for established client.

All the 1 also have recorded a source. Walk in yellow pages, friend, referral, etc. We also try to record who the referral is from.

In a typical month 20% of the invoice are to brand new clients, half of those get the referral code. We like these because the cost of obtaining the lead is very low. We try to let the refering client know that his efforts to help us has paid off.

By the way the 20 percent is of invoices not dollar sales. Usually first time customers place orders that are smaller then average. They are often price sensitive and a little leary of trusting us with a big project up front. Once they see how interested we are in their business and what kind of work we do the orders get bigger.
