Ive been dang sick for about a week now, and took some antibiotics with no relief. I have a dry, hard cough, low grade fever, scratchy throat, and stuffed up nose. The coughing is driving me crazy. Cant get anything done. Anyone here have allergies that produce these symptoms? Ive never had a problem with them, but my doc says this is whats going on, something about the bronchial tubes being inflamed or what not. Geeze, I feel crappy. Posted by pierre (Member # 1462) on :
Geez, Johahn! Bum deal. I have allergies (controlled), but a low grade fever would tell me your's isn't allergies. Surprises me that the doc thinks that, but he's the doc. Get well soon!

Claritin
I've been on it for allergies for a few years, now it's over the counter. Even when I had my sinus infections (which may be what you have) in january, my doc told me to take my claritin, it would help. I've had good luck with a cocktail of Claritin/Aleve Cold & Sinus (forget regualr Aleve) and Motrin (I had nasty headaches)
I'm with Pierre, the fever makes me think it isn't allergies. But with my sinus infections, I had a fever. The doc told me it could be allergies turning into a sinus infection, thus the reasoning behind the claritin.

I got burnt out on the Clariton because it's a steroid...not good for longevity. (mine)
I now take a whiff of Flonase if I feel sompn comin on I won't like to waller in. It helps when I wear a hat in cold/damp weather. Also, it's good to blow your nose before you go indoors (into a dry/heated area).
Before Clariton and Flonase, I used to wear a damp bandana on my schnoz during August in georgia, when the pollution and the pollen was so thick and cruddy. The best medicine is garlic and tons of water!!! Sipping coffee is good for stimulating the sympathetic glands, and adding cayenne to it is a serious hit of vitamin C, puryfies your bloodstream, boosts your immune system and minutes later, you're shedding layers. It keeps ya warm! LOL.
Of course any medical advice should be checked with your doctor.

I've had allergies for over forty years. Summertime was always misery. I finally got them under control with the nose sprays like Nasonex . This year , however, when I returned from two weeks in Florida, in a few days in the Memphis air ( the worst in the country as far as allergies goes ) I started having the same symptoms as you are discribing. My eyes started first, then the runny nose ( the first time in ten years. Coughing is usually not a problem with my allergies, but this year that started. I also went on anti biotics, also to no avail, I added Claritin to the nose spray routine and that helped immensly. I'm not sure if it's allergy related or not but it's definately a bummer. My son has it too, just not quite so bad. Anybody have a market for phlegm???
Oh , and Linda, I think Flonase is a steroid too, the ones I use are. If it means giving up a few years of my life to rid the sneezing, runny nose and those damn itchy eyes I'll do it gladly....quality of life. and all.

I am 37, and never had allergies until 4-5 years ago. I was on Allegra for the last couple years, but it wasn't doing the trick. I switched to Zertec, Flonase, and Singulair (sp sp sp), and much much much better.

Take 2 60MG of Allegra and call me in the morning.
This works for me as long as I remember to take it.
Also recommend Albuterol to help with the breathing (perscription only).
Good Luck John

damn...bunch of drugies.....hehehehehe. john for instant relife....got an ECKERDS THERE? they sell these cough lozengers called FISHERMANS FRIENDS. these things will make your eyeballes breath!!!! the low grade fever is not a symtom of allergys. you more in likly got a viral infection. somethings in your body that dont belong there, hence the fever. it your bodys way to fight infection. also get a bottle of GINGER BRANDY, medicinal purposes ONLY!!!! take a small glass of it, put just enough of it in your mouth so that when you swollow, there is almost no liquid, then as the brandy goes down, breath in.....this will open your bronchia.....and if you drink to much of the brandy..you wont notice the aliment....hehehehe. seriously the ginger is a chinese remedy for any breathing problem. i wont tell you to drink ginger tea(buy a ginger root, slice it up and boil for 30 mins, then drink)cause its the nastiest s***t ive ever tasted. also get some ecinacia tea, but mixit with a peppermint tea, both are good for respirtory problems.

Man, I sure appreciate all these replies and suggestions.I feel much better today. Doc put me on claritin and a pill to open up the lungs and stop the coughing. Yesterday, I was coughing probably every 30 seconds or so, so much that my ribs are sore today. Today, the coughing is much better, with the cough also being less dry. I am pretty sure I have bronchitis, due to some reading I did on the net. I took today off, and will lounge around this weekend to get better. But guess what, had two customers call me at home and even after telling them I was sick, they asked me would their sign be ready any sooner. Guess who got moved down a little on the work list?

I am not suffering this year like my Mom and neice. Only taking allegra occasionally now instead of every eight hours. The only thing I changed this year was to buy a Air Source air filter for work and a larger one for home. What I am saving in Allerga, Flonase and inhaler will pay for the air filter in the long run. And I feel better without the medication side affects of dry eyes and dry mouth.

I forgot about the air cleaner. My hubby has too much time on his hands when he's in his room at work and was watching those infomercials. We now have an Ionic Breeze. The price (300 or 350) was hard to swallow at first, but I have noticed a hugh difference. It's a bugger to clean, but it has helped me and my mutt (He's allergic to an airborn yeast) and has saved me on buying Claritin (I don't take it if I'm inside all day when the pollen is high) and has saved on Rocky's allergy shots.

I got one for ya. Anytime we have a cold, flu, or FOOD POISONING we go to the refrig and grab a jar of a concoction that we keep mixed up in there. What is this concoction you ask. Take a mason jar (Miracle whip works too) put in 1/3 cup of honey or sugar, 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar, and then fill with water. This concoction works great. If its too acid, add more water or ice.
Why does it work? Try culturing a virus or bacteria in a tablespoon of vinegar. You can't. By drinking the vinegar, you temporarily change your body chemistry from alkaline to acid (like the vinegar or brandy). A virus or bacteria can't live in a acid envirnoment.
