I received a file in eps format from Illustrator 9. When I open it in Corel 8, I get pages and pages of code. Any suggestions for getting the graphic to show?

It is possible Illustrator 9 is too new for Corel 8 to recognize. You might have them save as an Illustrator 3, 4 or 5 file. If that is not possible, email the file to me and I will try to save it in an older Illustrator format. My Corel 9 and 10 will only export up to Illustrator 7. I do not know what they will import up to Illustrator 9.
I have Illustrator 10 (although I am not very familiar with it--I have used Corel since version 3) and can probably save it in an older generation from there.
My FlexiSign Pro 7 doesn't tell me what version of Illustrator it is attempting to save as.

Yes, Corel will only recognize AI .eps files saved as version 7 or lower. (v. 8 and above have "transparency" features that don't translate well). So, the best thing to do is to ask your client to re-save the file as a version 7. (that way THEY make the decisions in case there are any "features" that get disabled in the re-save). Also, they'll have the original fonts and so forth, so re-saving is safer.
If it is a simple file, then anybody with Illustrator v9 or v10 can "dumb down" the copy.

Sometimes it's as simple as an e-mail problem. I'm on a Mac but every noow and than I receive an Illustrator file from another Mac shop just down the road. It too opens as pages of code. If they run it through Stuffit before they send it it unstuffs and opens perfectly. You might tell them to Zip the file after they resave as V.7.

Santo's file is on the way!
For a while, I thought I was at a dead end also. Corel and Flexi 7 would not import it. Illustrator 10 only showed pages of code. I ran it through Conversions Plus and it opened Illustrator a second time and showed the graphic correctly. I was then able to export and bring it into Corel and Flexi and save in compatible versions for Santo. That is the first time Conversions Plus has really worked for me.
It may well be an email issue. I have run into that a couple of times when email graphics would only open a bunch of code, although it hasn't happened to me in a couple of years.
