Samuri Sign Painter
------------------------------------------------------------

The morning started off ok I guess; my coffee, getting
the shop open, sitting down at the computer. This perticular
day I had a large Hino FA1750 bobtail to letter. I worked
on the vinyls with no hitches.(Truckers Pun) Once the vinyls
were completed, I went outside to actually do something to
the truck. I put a faux finish stripe along the entire length
of the box. I was getting near the end of the truck when I
saw this...that! Gofer. It was poking it's head out of it's
hole quickly; to see if it was all clear. I stood very still
and became the background I was working on. You see; I parked
the truck on the lawn, right in front of the shop. This gofer
had a hole that was near the left rear tires. The next time
he came out, he exposed his entire body, snached some grass
and hurriedly returned to his hole. I was right in the middle
of laying out some stablio lines with a four foot alumanium
straight edge. I have been perfecting my straight edge
techniques for many years now. The gofer poked his head out
and dissapeared again. During this time, with the stelth of
a feline, I dove under the truck and froze. Again, darting
in and out. That gofer was damn fast. About one second, to
go six or so inches from his hole, grab some grass, and
back-up into his hole again. I grabed my straight edge with
both hands, fingers locked, ready. Here he comes. With my
samuri straight edge in hand, and as quickly as possible, I
I let one loose. Then another. The battle was over in a
fraction of a second. My years of training have taught me
many things; like: attack the job, and get it over with
quickly. The first blow hit his lower torso, and snapped his
back in two. The second and fatel strike met just below his
head breaking his neck. He was already heading back into his
hole when I attacked. He didn't even know he was dead as he
went back into his hole. Confidently I stuck my fingers in his
hole, and pulled him out for you to see how important it is to
draw a straight line. Whether horizontal, or vertical.

Oh, and by the way. I am a master mole trapper. Last summer's tally was seven. Every time the little peckers invade my lawn I expertly place the spike traps. That'll teach them to ruin my lush green lawn!!

I have learned the ways of the ninja as well. I crept up on 4 different moles last summer and was still as a cheatah. When I detected them "humping" along the tunnel, I dove in with my shovel and popped them outa the ground. If the shovel doesn't get them, I carry them over and toss them into the street for the cars to finish off. They try like hell to dig in but can't penetrate the pavement. [Wink]

I can't stand the little destructive rodents! If my neighbor would take care of his moles, I wouldn't have any. They always come from his yard into mine. [Mad]

There where 3 moles, a papa mole, a mama mole, and a baby mole.

They all lived on a farm.

One moring the papa mole stuck his head out of the mole hole and said, Ooh i smell bacon"

The mama mole wanted to smell it too, so she stuck her head out of the mole hole. "ooh, i smell eggs!"

Baby mole wanted to smell this too, but there wasn't enough room for his head too fit out of the hole. "all i smell is mole-asses"

Stephen and Amy,

Apparently you both have never been annoyed by gophers that ruin everything you hold dear -like your lawn, your garden, your driveway and chew your underground pipes and wiring. When there is 200 of them and only one of you, you won't feel bad at all killing a gopher.

Those allumium rules are the best thing since "sliced Bread"!!!! I lov them.

Lightweight, marked both sides and edges, cheap and a "lethal weapon" when required [Smile]

Doing a mural on a wall next to some grain silos on a property out west recently. Walked around around the compressor and literally stepped on a 2ft brown snake! Happened to have the trusty rule in my left hand ... auto-reaction was backhanded slash that took its head clean off.

If that thing hadda been full grown ... like 6 - 8ft it might have been a different story!!!! [Smile] I would have been taking large steps and towards the horizon! If it had bit me, I probably wouldn't make more than 2 steps anyway hahahaha

I had a goose that came up behind me while I was putting my son into a carseat and popped me on the leg with his wing. I had a wooden ruler on th efloorboard of the car and applied a backhand to the head. Knocked an eye kinda silly. The next day that sucker attacked the boy while the wife had him outside. The wife don't play that s*+t. She brought the boy inside and came back outside and threw a #2 washtub over the goose, got the machete and lifted up the edge of the washtub. Need I say more. Goose is mighty tasty.

I am saddened at humankind finding joy in killing. We each paint our own sign. My dad said there is no black & white; it's all just shades of gray.
So, in addition to sign making, we raise & sell worms. (Foley Farms)
We do find moles in our worm beds, moles love worms; and not to wine and dine, but to eat. Therefore, when a mole is found in a worm bed, I move it to our compost pile where it's okay that the moles eat the worms. And, now pretty much they stay at the compost pile.
Gophers on the other hand don't eat worms and they've angered me a few times destroying areas of my "park", (it's an acre of a front yard), and they move my bulbs.
I just had to believe I was smarter than the average gopher so I lured some and caught some and relocated them to an area I'll share with them. They listen better than my kids!
We all seem to live together with no killing. I feed the little squirrel dudes and they live in our trees.
I like it that way and smile at nature. Wishing you all a good day!

Pat, I don't think most persons really enjoy killing but find it necessary for someone else to do their deed in order put food on their table. If you are a vegitarian, this wouldn't apply to you, would it?
Not everyone is as forgiving and as for me and my 4 acres, those little hole diggers best not eat my plants or their families will miss them.

I gotta admit....killing varmints is fun to me! Plunging a sharp shovel through the spine of a yard destroying mole gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction.

PETA people are funny! [Smile] I wonder if they would hesitate to swat a known malaria carrying mosquitto on their arm....or squash a black widow crawling up their leg? All are living creatures right? How about cockroaches? Let them live as well?....hehehe.

Just this morning I took a shot off my back deck at a woodchuck out in the field. I've been trying to nail him for several weeks now. He's about a hundred yards out. The farmer who farms the land said, "kill every one you see", because they dig hug holes in the fields that the farmers screw their equipment up on.

Hey, if I ever tag him, he'll make darn good worm food. [Smile]

I've been trying to get the devil with my .22. I may have to bring out the big guns....lay down on my deck with my AR-15 and set the tripods up! [Wink]

Yes
I Hunt or Kill for Food! (Deer,Moose,Fish,Seal,Rabbits,Fowl Etc.)

But I will never kill for the Sport of it.......

I walk on this planet and they have to live and exist beneath me.

You invade their habitate and yet you thing that it is wrong for them to live in yours.

How simple a solution!

We polute their home lands and waters and except the word of we are the right ones here!

If you did believe in a "God" then I think all that are going to Heaven will be the creature of the kingdom and not (Man).

We were ask to look over the animals of the world as our own.

Billions of dollars are spend by people on "Dogs and Cats" and they do more damage than the wildlife of this Planet.

There is not (One Other Creature) on this ROCK that kills for Sport Alone!

It kills for Food!
Name me one that does.

They will happily munch on burgers from McDonald's, chicken from the Colonel, ribs at Tony Roma's, cod from H.Salt, wear leather shoes, sit on leather seats in their Lexus....but scream if you kill a pest!

Sometimes I think that they have bubbles in their think tank! Or are the world's biggest hipocrites!

Stephan,

I gotta agree with Si....there are animals that kill for sport. Jeez, how many times have I read in the papers lately about a pit bull or Rotwiller that chased a kid down, tore him to shreds and walked away happy about doing so?!

That comes to the top of my head...I'm sure there are more.

Animals in heaven? You must be a Jehovah's witness?

If a dog did "damage" to one of my kids or a neighbor, that dog would be considered a pest and nuisance by me and promptly shot in the head, in the woods of course, so I wouldn't be spotted by the PETA crazies.

Animals aren't nearly as innocent as you think...and if you cherish nature to such a high degree, you must have heard that scientists believe cows "belches" greatly contribute to the depletion of the ozone, right? Our perfect animals?

Can you directly answer me this? Ever step on a spider, ant, or other insect? Ever use a flyswatter to kill a fly that landed on your "veggie" burger? A mosquitto? Ever hook a worm to go fishing? If you've done any of these things, you have killed one of nature's creatures. No different than us killing some rodent that tunneled it's way into our yard.

Next?

You asked this question!

1:Rotwileer...

Look at my post again about that the Billions of dollars spend on Dogs and cats!
They cause more damage than any other creature (Beside Man) on the face of this planet.

2:Jehouah Witness
No Sir just someone that believe in unity of all creatures Great or Small. (Christian)

3:Cows Belching
OK and the gas gulping industry is not a factor to this problem? Ha! Ha! OK!!!!!

4: Spiders,Ants, or other Insects
Never because I believe in the natural order of Natures Law. (Pesticide Works wonders Don't They!)

5: Worm on a hook!
To provide food on my table as it is
a chain that the fish will eat that I can suppl
food on my table. (Not a Sport).

6: Mosquitto!
I guess you don't know that there is over
200 Billion living creatures on this planet
to the number of 6.5 Billion Humans here!

7: How Tall or Small are we really?

8: Next!

Stepehn you're talking out of both sides of your rear end here...you're vehemently against killing but yet you admit you kill animals when you hunt? For food? sure, because Nova Scotia doesn't have grocery stores right? Baloney....modern day hunting is done for sport whether you want to claim its for "food" or not. If you really want to believe smacking a mole with a metal straight edge is any different than you sitting for hours somewhere waiting for a moose to be still take a dump so you can cap him in the ass with a 30.06... go right on ahead and pretend its 1841 and you're Daniel Boone. Same thing, diff day. Belive me there like Si said there are plenty of animals,2 legged and 4 legged that kill just because they like to do it. If you hunt, you're no diff...theres no reason in the 21st century and living in a city that you need to be dependent on food you kill yourself to survive, thats an argument you use to make yourself feel better about blasting Bambi between the eyeballs from a tree. And no,b4 i get 100 emails from hunters,i'm not against hunting in any way, shape or form.just using it as an example to demonstrate a point.

I picked a deer off with my truck a couple weeks ago. The dummy ran right into the side of me as I was doing 60. About $500.00 damage so really not a big deal.

Hunters. Every one else in my family is a big hunter or fisherman. I get to fish once in a while. I used to hunt in high school. Then, as I worked in the meat business as a butcher/meat cutter for many years I never really seemed to have the time. We did process deer, and when I was not at work... I was processing deer. Man, I got to the point where I hated those damn things. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against hunting. I have nothing against venison. I have nothing against people that choose to NOT hunt or even eat meat.

What I do have a problem with is the fact that there are many, many, many hunters out there that have absolutely no business hunting, let alone hae anything to do with firearms, knives, automobiles, or even putting one foot in front of the other to get from here to there.

There are those that hunt that I would consider "professional" at what they do. Many novice hunters are more professional and careful than some that have been out there for years.

I can tell you from personal experience that many of the hunters out there are a joke and have no business being out there. There are boneheads that are looking for an excuse to get wasted for several days in a row. Guys that don't do more than sit on their a$$ most of the time expect to hike all over the country heart attack free. Gangs of boneheads that had HIGH hopes for the season and now it's 1/2 hour before sunset on the last day of the season and "bambi" runs down the fenceline. "THERE HE GOES"! BOOM times 80. Everyone unloads on this deer. Then... they wonder why I can't get any meat off of this thing.

Let me stop and remind you that I have NOTHING against hunting if they do it the right way.

OK, then there's the guy that hooks a rope on his 4x4 and drags the deer carcass 3 or 4 miles down a rocky road back to camp beacuse "it was getting cold".

Or the ones that hang 8 carcasses on the 4x4 and drive it that way from Wyoming to Illinois.

Or the guy (s) that hang up the field dressed deer and go into the house to celebrate... leaving the dog to have his way with everything in the garage.

OH, by the way... hang that damn deer by the hind legs, not the head. Not if you expect to really get any good cuts off of that thing.

Alright then... around here and in many other areas of the country the urban sprawl has overtaken much of the natural ground of our 4 legged buddies. This means also that there a more places where it is "safe" for deer to hide out during deer season. Why not? There's plenty of fresh landscaping to tear up at the Jone's house... then again, not really. There is not that much extra food, let's go tear it up anyway. While we are here we can boink each other and make more deer. Of course, with more of us there will be even less food and many of us will get sick or diseased and die. That's if we don't get hit by a car first.

Back to my point. Do I have one? NO, not really other than the fact that there are good reasons on all sides. I have slaughtered more animals than I can remember. It was my job and I was good at it. I slaughtered for the first 10 years. That was enough. Not because I couldn't stand to do it... have you ever seen a guy that has done that work ALL of his life? That's a hard way to make a buck. Well, the bucks were ok, but the job will kill you.

So, I beleive that you CAN hunt for "food"... but along with the idea that you are thinning out the herd to make it healthier and to reduce the number of accidents (auto) that cost and kill us.

I believe that you CAN hunt for sport. If you do, do just that. Go for the trophy, not the bambi 84 pounder. Go out and excercise before the season. Practice shooting. The A$$ is a MUCH bigger target than the head or an exact heart shot if you are mounting your prize. How much more sportsmanship-like would it be if you reserved yourself to being a PRO and not just going for broke on the last day.

And most of all, don't come to me with deer to process. [Smile] [Smile] [Smile] [Smile] [Smile] [Smile]

Gavin

I am not talking out of my Azz.

I never said I hunted with a rifle.
I Bow Hunt only.
Only to take what is allowed by Law.

Yes sir there is Grocery Stores here but when steaks are $8-$14. and roasts are $20-$30.

It is nice to know that you can fill the freezer with deer or moose for the cost of the tag and a $4.00 Arrow.

Nothing on the animal gets wasted, the hide can be given to tan the trophy horns for crafts etc etc etc.

I was once out with mt bothers inlaw and THEY were shooting at a porcupine in a tree.
I ask why they were doing this? For the Sport of it!
They killed it and it fell to the ground.
I asked again what were they going to do with it?
Nothing.
So I skin it and bag and took it home and but it in the freezer.
6 months later I invited them to my house for a roast supper.
They enjoyed the meal and after supper I announced that they had just eaten the animal they killed 6 months ago.
Their eyes popped out of their head.

Now again I say that if your going to kill something do it for food and not the sport of saying I bagged this animal.

A game warden came upon a man, camped in the woods, cooking something over an open fire.

The game warden walks up, looks around at the feathers and says: "looks like you've killed yourself a whooping crane sir, I'm gonna hafta write you a ticket."

So he writes the ticket, turns to walk away, and says: "by the way, what does a whooping crane taste like?"

the guy squints one eye, cocks his head to the side and says: "somewhere between a redheaded woodpecker and a spotted owl"

I have nothing against hunting either...I couldn't do it personally, never been around it, but have enjoyed dinners with friends who hunt.

If you live where there is an abundance of deer, elk, moose, whathaveyou, and can fill your freezer for a year, great!

I've enjoyed Michael Boone's and Stephen's homemade venison jerky (gladly take more!).

BTW, I have a friend who killed and ate a porkupine once, he said it was real greasy and tasted fishy [Razz] !

Blowing away animals just for fun is stupid and wasteful, if you have pests who are invading your garden and they can't be easily caught and moved, then I have no problem with erradicating them as neccessary (remember, I live with an exterminator)

Pass me that veggie burger, oh, can ya put a couple slices of bacon in it for me? [Razz] thanks!

Vegitarian? I don't even think I can spell it, and I know I can't practice it. I do respect those that do and can.
My point is that killing anything just for the sake of killing it, of course, in my opinion, is the darker side of the human race. I did my best to raise my kids to respect life, all life. That's it, just respect.
Personally, I like to focus on the good side of human nature.
Reading these posts just reminds me of what a great bunch of people are out there. Sometimes after reading one, I just say, "I just love you!" Not anyone in particular, it's just a smile, a joy, a feeling I get from some of the posts I read.
Some also have the ability, or tact, or grace, of telling someone to go to hell and the reader doesn't even get it for three of four days. Now that's diplomacy at it's finest!
And, Oh, Glenn, that picture is just too cute!
I need a big one like that for my yard! Now that would make my neighbors smile!
Have a good week end everyone and I'm going to go try to be creative.......

They eat muscrats here in Wyandotte. How's that for weird eats. Story goes during the depression people couldn't afford much meat, and for Catholics fish on fridays was an extravagance, so the Pope gave special dispensation for muscrats on fridays.
Still a strong tradition for some rodent eaters around here.

Posted by Wayne Webb (Member # 1124) on :

Folks were so poor here that during the Depression, they didn't even know there was a Depression. They ate possums, coons, squirrels, anything they could catch. I've even heard my great uncle talk about eating dirt. Possums and 'coons are still a delicacy here.

Possums...four legged buzzards. Ever see two flattened possums a few yards apart on the road? Ya know why? Cuz one got killed a few nights before and then his brother got flattened while snackin' on 'em. [Eek!]

I love to deer hunt and if I kill a big one, his shoulder mount is going to grace my wall but, first and foremost his meat is going in my freezer! Don't just kill things for the sake of killing.
