I seem to be having trouble with the designs that I print after I render them in Fireworks...they have a line running vertical thru them. I export them from an older version of Flexi ( 5.8v2) as a AI file, and import to Corel and export as AI from Corel, then I import to Fireworks to render.......see attached..
The most obvious line is thru the ( C ) in Pharmacy.
Any help would be appreciated.......this is a variation of Mark Fairs Design...... Shep'
put in wireframe mode, no color, and see where the lines start......then break apart and recombine...used to have same problem with PRO-CUT. would export from corel to PRO-CUT and it would add the lines in procut. and try exporting as EPS

When you bring the file into COREL, Ungroup the shapes, then weld them back together. Corel sometimes likes to add those lines during exporting when you have a group of shapes.
Otherwise, try exporting an EPS from Flexi. I dont know if Flexi has that option, never used it.

I also seem to have this problem. I'm not sure if it happens when the AI file is created, or when I import it into CD10. I don't have it all of the time, but I have had to spend more time than I want going to wireframe and breaking the line. I know it can be fixed... I just don't know why it happens.
Always something, huh?

My Flexi program exports in AI...Eps format
I have tried all suggestions above, sometime it is better, but most of the time it is worse. Thanks for the help...I guess I will have to live with it or try some other means.....I really like the Fireworks program.....but I cannot direct scan with that program,,,I can prescan but it locks up about 1/3 of the way thru.......Same with Corel. I have downloaded drivers etc.etc. Still will not scan. No problem with Flexi or some pther programs....Thanks for everyones help. Shep'

Corel puts those lines in everything EVERY time I export a Corel file as AI. And it doesn't matter if its Mac or PC. I don't know why they bother putting an export feature in the program if it isn't going to work right. Don't these people test their own software functions?
Another one is Flexi. No verticle lines, instead, Flexi puts an unstroked, unfilled copy of everything under the colored version. Everytime I export from Flexi to AI, I have to click on every object, lock them, then select all which grabs all the unlocked "invisible" objects, then delete them. If this isn't done the plotter will double cut everything!

Hi Shep, That's a lot of importing and exporting. I know Corel doesn't do .eps conversions so hot, especially when there are fountain fills involved. (AI is a form of .eps). It will try to render blends as a series of bands and on very complex graphics may drop parts completely.
The first thing to do is find out where the offending extra objects are coming from - when you import the Flexi file INTO Corel? When you export the edited file FROM Corel? or when they are imported the final time into Fireworks?
You can usually tell spot a garbled .eps conversion by viewing in wireframe. If it is happening when you import from Flexi, you may be stuck with repairing it in Corel before exporting for the next phase, unless there is another format you could convert them to in Flexi that Corel would be happier with. Have you tried importing with a "Postscript Interpreted EPS" or "AI" filter instead of straight EPS? That can make a big difference.
If the Flexi files seem to import into Corel properly then the problem may be happening when you export. Same strategy - is there another format you could export to that Fireworks would like better?
A tip - every setting you select in the EPS export menu can effect compatibility with the next program that will need to deal with that file... for instance, I put up with erratic success exporting eps files for my Cadlink plotter bridge program for years. Sometimes they just wouldn't open - Bad File Found. By accident one day I discovered that it was caused by trying to select part of the drawing and export it using the 'selected only' button in Corel's export menu. Turns out that is a no-no for this particular antique version of Cadlink. Since I learned to simply send the entire file, no more surprises.
My point is try all the settings you can to find the most compatible. Exporting as AI is still EPS to most programs. Maybe Fireworks would munch better on an AI. Then there are many different versions of AI from something like v1.1 to v9. Something should work consistently. Good luck Shep.

Hey Arvil - nice design!
This may or not help but here goes. I get a lot of converted (to AI from Flexi) files, and when opened in Corel they almost always have a double set of lines. In my case it is as simple as ungrouping the two objects, selecting the object with extra lines and deleting. What is left is a clean set of art. Can't explain it, just telling you what I see. Vic C

The import looks ok in Corel......it seems to lose (Or gain a few lines )when it is brought in to Fireworks.........I can't get Fireworks to open any other files except Ai........As I said ........I am doing something wrong........ I will keep trying.....meanwhile if anyone knows of a solution.......please let me know...Thanks Shep'

my limited experience with fireworks.
it will only accept an .ai file.
i am sure fireworks will let you open other files, but i have not been sucessful in doing so.
i too have had problems with the vertical lines in corel draw. i no longer use corel.
my programs consist of gerber composer 6.0 and fireworks when it comes to a presentational sketch.
keep on asking the questions shep, there are many here that know more than i do.
great responses.
cya buddy.

I don't know about fireworks but on the rare occasion I use an alphabet from Corel (because I consider most of them are of less than desirable quality) I always get the "lines" but in Gerber just highlight (select) the letter and hit contour presto it becomes a usable letter.
If corel is so good why doesn't it provide a like program to eliminate this problem?

If Corel is so Corel, why doesn't it Corel???

simple way to solve problem...dont export outa corel...cut it from corel .....i never have the problem.......and i cut from corel to plotter.....

The problem is in the Corel export.
Ungroup all your shapes while you have the file open in Corel and that should do it. This is a common problem and Ungrouping everything is the standard solution.

Just my meager 1 1/2 cents worth: I have NEVER experienced the additional lines by exporting as an .AI file. I export .AI files into not only Fireworks, but Freehand, XaraX, Illustrator, etc. and send lots of files to a fellow sign guy who uses Flexi. I currently use ver. 7 & 9, but I have the latest patches and bugfixes installed. Could be which version of Corel you are using (Some versions ((6&8))are notoriously filled with bugs), or you could have a software glich in the export filters. (I cut from ver. 7 to a Roland CAMM1.)
I also found out that my Fireworks4 program has some import quirks that I have not been able to find the patches for.
The only times I have ever encountered the extra lines or other garbage is from IMPORTING a .EPS file into Corel, which I learned many years ago that Corel only likes the .AI, so I don't even bother with the .EPS
I would definately check out the export filters in Corel and try creating something in another program and see if Fireworks is Importing correctly.
Oh well, like I said just my 1 1/2 cents... add $3.48 and you can get yourself a cup of coffee.

Thanks for the input guys..... ( and "old Paint" the point was to get the file in FIREWORKS.. Corel is just a way to do it because My Flexi Program ( where I create the art ) will not export to Fireworks with the version I have ( and I dont want to spend about $1000, to upgrade) just for presentation purposes....... any more suggestions ??? Arvil, try exporting solid colours only (no gradients) and then adding the colour in Fireworks. Works for me on the trial version.
Corel has the ability to do this stuff with the use of Adobe Photoshop compatible plugins like Eye Candy, which it appears is what Fireworks is using anyway. You tell Corel where your plug-ins reside on your hard drive in the options->workspace->plugins dialog box. You have to duplicate the area you want to apply the effects to and turn it into a bitmap though - Corel will not apply those effects to vector objects, but power clipping it back into the original vectors provides the same results.

Hi...
my two cents again. Try this, may or may not work. Like some of the othe guys said. I f the extra lines are created when bringing the file into Corel, look at the wireframe & you will just have to fix it. Then before you export break apart , ungroup, convert to curves & all that. Then in the .AI exprort box, choose version 1.1. This works for me exporting to Gerber GA from Corel

shep...dont know what fireworks is and have never seen or used it.....but ive had the added line problem with the old pro-cut program....and as mike said to convert to curves, break apart and combine usually will do the trick..the reason the added lines are there is that there is a double image of the object.....corel will do this to some objects and not others..i think it has to do with the complexity of the object....if you take that graphic apart in corel, make sure each piece has the line thickness at lowest setting,(corels default line setting is .003 and it should be .0004 or 5) convert to curves, and recombine each piece, then put it all back together then export, i think it will solve your problem. all i was sayin about corel...is it will do anything you want....but you gota do it corels way!

Arvil, if you are still fishing in a dry hole, here is something else to try.
After you convert the file to AI, open it in Illustrator and then immediately re-save it. Like all the other "magic" things that happen with export filters, sometimes this works.
If you don't have Illustrator, shoot the file to me and I will give it a shot for you. Vic G

Vic, I do not have illustrator... I have Adobe Photo Shop 6..will this work ?? I am experiencing trouble with Road Runner...when they get it stable I will send it to you..hopefully later today..Thanks for your help. Shep' PS my Corel ver is Corel 8 and my Flexi is 5.8
also try COPY & PASTE......see if that helps..

This is the latest rendering thru Fireworks. I seem to have the "Lines" problem fixed. (Thanks to the help of all of your responses) The problem was in exporting from Corel.. I finally got all of the settings right.
What happened to the spell check feature ?????
The reason that I really wanted to be able to use this program is.....I do a lot of sandblasting and/or carving of urethane, and this seems to represent the finished product best..(Some of my customers can't seem to visualize what the finished product will look like without actually seeing something like this} anyone else have this problem ???????? Does anyone know of a way to simmulate woodgrain on a rendering like this ??????
