I had to reboot to get rid of them...
OK...so I remember someone mentioning this problem and the solution...I can't find it now...
If I turn off my cookies and empty the cookies folders what kinds of problems will that cause?
Thanks...
Adrienne

Tools-Internet Options-Security-Custom Level.
Disable ActiveX controls, Active scripting and Java applets. Then OK back out.

I grabbed PopUp Stopper ... thanks for the tip.
But, they need to add some more options to it. It prevents all popups, not just the self-loading kind. So when you want Popup information, you have to disable PopUp Stopper.
At our site, www.summadirect.com/us/merchant.mv , we use Java Script PopWin's all over the place. BUT, they're "onClick" not the $%#@! "onLoad" variety. In other words, you have to click on the link to get more information (in a handy pop-up window) ... it doesn't load automatically, nor will we ever use auto pops!
Also, PUS prevents HTML "target=_blank" tags, which loads the clicked-on link in a new browser window. That's a commonly used tag ... case in point Letterville, which has a "base target=_blank" meta tag in the header. This allows us to check out suggested links without leaving the BB. I think that most would consider that useful ... simply close the external window, rather than Back, Back, Back, ...
Also, disabling Java, which Ultimate Bulletin Board uses extensively, would be a real hassle when using this BB.
I'd suggest that users stop going to sites that use auto popups. Site owners will quickly catch on. And while we're at it, NEVER buy anything from spammers. Spam has proven to be fairly unpopular, and it's gone way down. But, we ain't there yet.
IMHO,
Jim
It's like Gavin said, I'd buy that dang camera if they'd stop it!!
But the ones that have no way to close the window like the ones I got last night were new to me...thanks Sticker for the ctrl+alt+del option, I didn't think of that.

My mom was here a few weekends ago visiting when my sister came to Havasu, and she ran into the same kinda window without any way to close it. I was in here talkin to her and all of a sudden I hear the switch on the computer click.. she turned it off! hahahahaha!!
Back in the late '50s, the annoyance you're complaining about was called the "Chicago School" of advertising, or "hit 'em over the head." Car and furniture dealers still twist it to the hilt. On the other side was the "New York" school, or "stroke 'em." Their glory was achieved in the late '70s with "We're the people people, and we love you. We thought you'd like to know." The oil cartels bought that one big-time. By now we probably have an LA school, as well as Seattle, Toronto, Sidney. . .
Anyway, the stick and carrot both are used in broadcast advertising for the past 50 years, because of history and tradition. Our Cro-Magnon ancestors found that sometimes the stick works as well as the carrot, to train a donkey.
Books I recommend are _Confessions of an Advertising Man_ by David Ogilvy and _Shafted_ by Niocholas Samstag. There are others, which I can classify only as "autobiographies by successful, retired ad executives." They tend to be VERY good reads. First, these guys know how to write, which is why they're fun to read. Second, they don't have to kiss arse anymore.
