Hey there folks. I'm doing another menu board, this time HDU (Stuff is awesome!) I cut & routed out the name of the restaurant from 1" material, & I'm wondering if I should sand it super smooth or texturize it before gilding it. I come up with the Q since I'm doing a rustic desert type scenery menu. I wish I could post it!!!! ARRRGH!!!!

I believe you answered your own question, if it is rustic, it seems that a rough finish would work well.

Felix, First e-mail your photo (or 2 or 3) and I will put it up for you until you get a place to house photos, and I will send you a link to it. Second, I feel that a smooth gild even on rustic would look fine. If you really want it "that rustic", I would not bother with the gild at all. If you feel you need to do textured, smooth the texturing (like a carved facet), as it will look better anyway. If you need rough texture, I would use a good gold paint and hit and miss gild the highlights. This would be hard to get even without practice, but probably require a spattering of the fingers technique known as dabbling or dobbing to us high tech dudes. Take Care, Bronzeo
p.s. I'll bet you even know what bronzeo means don't you.
