Im using Windows 98. I use WinFile quite a bit to move files around, delete, and copy. I use it so much, I created a shortcut icon on the Desktop to pull it up quickly. The Icon looks like a file cabinet.

Now here is the peculiar thing: When in File Manager (Winfile) I can't see my "Temporary Internet Files folder. There should be a file folder under C:\Windows\Temporary Internet files....but there is no such folder.

However, when I go to burn a CD, I can see the
folder: C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files in the browser window of the Adeptec CD Creator and move any file from that folder to burn on the CD drive.

There are some files I want to move out of the Tempoary Internet files into another folder on the C: drive (like an MP3 file I downloaded off of fellow Letterhead Joes Rees site)

Well, I can't copy or move files in Windows 98 Temporary Internet files like you can in newer Windows versions. But that is not what is bugging me.

Why can't I see the C:\Windows Temporary Internet Files when in File Manger, but I can see them when I am in the Adaptect CD Creator?

(I do have an Icon on the desktop to view and delete Temporary Internet Files, and some I can even copy, like .gif files, and open them in Corel PhotoPaint.)

I can not copy the MP3 files and paste them in another folder from the Temporary Internet Files window like I can the .gif files. Nor can I click on the files and drag them off the screen into another window into a desired folder.

So, I figure I can go to file manager and copy or move the MP3 file from the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet File folder...BUT THIS FOLDER IS NOT VISIBLE....ITS NOT THERE PERIOD....yet this folder does show up in the CD creator browser.

This is freaking me out. What I want to do is be able to access the C:Windows\Temporary Internet File folder from within WinFile (file manager)

Does anyone know what is going on? I know how to create a new folder under C:\windows and name it Temporary Internet Files...but then I will probably have two and no guareentee the computer will save them in the new folder I created.

I did copy the the MP3 file to the CD Creator and now its on a CD. I can move it back to the C drive in the folder I want, but that does not solve the problem at hand.

Again, when I am in File Manager, I want to be able to click on the C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder, open it, and move files directly into other folders. It would sure help if the folder was visable. It has to be there, right?

It's time to step up to the wonderful world of 32 bit programs (WinFile is 16 bit, doesnt support long file names either) and get used to Windows Explorer.

You can see the Temp Internet Files folder through Windows Explorer, and you can even drag and drop them from Explorer into other programs.

Part of the problem is that folder is set with a "System" attribute (files and folders have 4 attributes available: Archive, Read-Only, Hidden, System) so you cannot modify the contents of the folder manually, only the Operating System can change it.

In Windows 98, you can set folder options to be able to view all files and folders regardless of the attributes set on them, when using Windows Explorer.

So, just pop open a few sessions of Windows Explorer and drag your files between them.
 

I'd bump up to a new version of Windows if I were completely sure it wouldn't reek havoc with my signmaking programs.

A newer version of Windows wont help ya in this case, this "problem" is just because WinFile is an old remnant from the Win3.X days and while it is still included with new versions of Windows, it has not been updated to take advantage of the newer features, plus it cannot "see" folders and files with the System Attribute.

You can use Windows Explorer, it DOES "see" the folder... and there are other third party File Managing programs out there you could seek out.

I wish they would update WinFile too though (another hardcore WinFile user here.. hehehe), it was handy having multiple Drives and Folders visible on the same screen without having to resize the windows to see everything.
